We are a non-profit organization that is devoted to the conservation and understanding of raptor species worldwide. Our mission is to make the world a better place for raptors through education and science. Our vision is to improve appreciation of raptors and understanding of their role in our ecosystem in order for them to live in a world free of habitat destruction, toxins and climate change. We offer classroom/formal education, outreach, camps, raptor experiences and falconry experiences using trained raptors in order for the public to not only enjoy these beautiful birds up close but to have a better understanding of their role in our ecosystem as an apex predator. The ancient culture of Falconry has played a pioneering role in raptor conservation and the Center will honor that heritage through ethical falconry practices and education. We offer presentations about the history of Falconry as well as coaching for those who want to improve their raptor husbandry and/or training. Our ultimate vision for the Center is to be a specialty wildlife center dedicated exclusively to raptors for the public to visit and enjoy a collection of internationally represented species (hence 'International' in the name). This future would include providing medical care and rehabilitation to injured or sick raptors and state-of-the-art raptor hospital as well as offering avian medicine internships.

Moira literally jumps for joy every morning when I put her on her perch in her weathering yard.

She does get some weird feathers that grow (or pinch off) out of her surgery site. This was one of her weirder ones.

I have noticed since Dr. Pilny removed that huge feather cyst and did some “work” on her surrounding feather follicles, there are less pinched feathers and ones that grow in deformed.

This time last year she started plucking her legs and showing signs of discomfort (apparently it had been an annual thing) so it will be interesting to see if she develops the same issue this year.
So far so good. 🤞🏻

Part One: Introducing Tabasco! This is a new addition to the IRFC Flying Team. She is a 6-year old female Harris Hawk from my very good friend Devin Jaffe/Nature’s Educators/Mile High Falcons.
She comes as a highly experienced education demo bird and abatement; however, she came by her name honestly and was a bit too spicy for some staff. And it was felt this young lady would be best suited for hunting as a true falconry bird. I have had her about 2 weeks and I can see why Devin made the decision. She’s intense and VERY busy.

She does have a disfigured right leg due to a femur fracture that her original falconer (not Devin) did not treat properly. Not following current accepted avian medical protocol of having the bone pinned through surgery, the muscle contracts and pulls the bone out of alignment and fused crooked. Had this bird been treated properly the outcome would have been much different.
I have more thoughts on why this bird was not taken to a vet but I’ll leave it here for now.

So I agreed to give her a try and with the assistance from Bridger 🤞🏻 the plan is to provide her with the life she’s meant to live.

This is her first work session after being allowed to just hang out and decompress for a week.

There really shouldn’t be a Columbus Day holiday for so many reasons.

He did not discover America, the indigenous people already here did. He wasn’t even the first European to step foot on the continent, the Vikings did that 450+ years prior to him.
And he thought he was in India, why the Native people were called Indians.

The evil Columbus facilitated to this stolen land isn’t worthy of a holiday in any sense.

Celebrate the Native people who were here first.

Yesterday, IRFC was proud to donate its time and programming to support the Pioneer Museum’s Open House, bringing Moira the Bald Eagle, Druantia the Turkey Vulture, and Avalina the Barn Owl to help draw visitors and renewed attention to the Museum.

And draw visitors they did! More than 240 people came through the Pioneer Museum during the event, and we were told IRFC’s raptor presentation was by far the most popular program of the day.

For two very busy hours, we had a steady crowd eager to meet the birds, ask questions, and learn more about the raptors that share our world.

Our purpose in participating was simple: to help support the Pioneer Museum as it works to reconnect with the Flagstaff community and bring renewed interest to this piece of local history.

We were happy to contribute IRFC’s birds, expertise, and time toward that effort.

Thank you to everyone who came out to see us, including the familiar faces who continue to follow IRFC programs around Northern Arizona.

We appreciate your continued support, and we wish the Pioneer Museum success as it moves forward.

Moira has officially clocked in for duty!

She’s enjoying her late night, because she’s an awesome fu@king eagle, snack before bed.
She stepped up like a boss. The only thing that was difficult was getting those water logged leather flying jesses out of her anklets. I swear I nearly dislocated my knuckles trying to get them out. Nothing more fun than managing a 10 pound eagle breathing in your face on your glove AND squeezing out jesses with one hand.
She made it easy. She’s such a good girl, I tell her every day she’s the best damn eagle in the world. Not sure what I will do when I get another; cross that bridge later…until then my statement stands.
She will be very excited and happy to sunbathe all day tomorrow; today was cloudy and cold.
