Be Humanitarian We inspire volunteers to become global citizens who improve the world around them. Volunteers can join us in Guatemala to see how our program works first hand.

Or, travel alone and volunteer with our community while you are there. We have a breakfast, lunch and dinner program that is providing thousands of meals a month to a remote Guatemalan community. Sponsors donate monthly to fund this project. We have children attending our own preschool and local schools and a community of parents who are involved and dedicated to the success of our project. Our community is working together to improve the lives of children. The kiddos have a physical check-up each month to track their progress. Most women in Guatemala finish their education by the 3rd grade so our program allows these moms to learn valuable skills that will impact the lives of their children and their grandchildren.

Guatemala is breathtaking.
Volcanoes. Lake Atitlán. Colorful markets. Incredible food. Beautiful textiles. Centuries of culture and tradition.

But there is another side of Guatemala that doesn't always make it into the travel photos.

Many rural families continue to face challenges with nutrition, education, employment, and access to basic resources.

We believe meaningful travel allows us to hold both truths at once.

Come appreciate the beauty. Learn about the culture. Meet the people who call Guatemala home. And take the time to understand some of the challenges their communities are working to overcome.

You may arrive wanting to see Guatemala.

You might leave seeing the world a little differently. ❤️🌎

Sometimes opportunity begins with something as simple as having a book to open. 📚💛

Our vision for our community center in Guatemala includes a dedicated library where children, university students, and families can have greater access to books and educational resources.

We even have a set of Spanish language encyclopedias waiting in storage for the day they can finally have a home on the shelves.

For us, education isn’t only about helping a child attend school. It’s about surrounding them with opportunities to stay curious, keep learning, and imagine what their future could become.

Because when we invest in a child’s education, the impact can reach far beyond one generation.

How cool is this! Our founder has been highlighted in the Women to Know magazine. Thanks to Colleen Spears for being a true example of a humanitarian and being the catalyst to Be Humanitarian!!

WHO INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST?
My mom has influenced me more than anyone else. As a single mom raising six children, she worked tirelessly despite incredible hardship. We relied on food stamps, Section 8 housing, and welfare, but she never allowed our circumstances to define our future. Her resilience, compassion, and determination taught me that creating a beautiful life is not about titles or possessions. It is about serving others with courage, integrity, and unwavering hope.

WHAT DOES WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT MEAN TO YOU?
Women empowerment means creating opportunities for women, both young and old, to discover their own strength, use their voice, and build lives filled with purpose and independence. It is about removing barriers, investing in their potential, and walking beside them as they lead. I believe every woman deserves the opportunity to dream because when a woman is empowered, she changes not only her own future but the future of her family and her community.

HOW ARE YOU SUPPORTING THE NEXT GENERATION OF FEMALE LEADERS?
I believe the greatest way to develop leaders is by believing in them. Through Be Humanitarian, we invest in girls' education, provide university scholarships for women, create employment opportunities for women, and mentor young women to lead within their own communities. I have witnessed the incredible transformation that happens when women know someone believes in them. My goal is to help them recognize the leadership they already possess and give them the confidence and opportunity to use it.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?
Growing up, my mother often reminded us that someone would always have more than we did, and someone would always have less. She taught us not to compare our circumstances but to look for people we could serve. That lesson shaped my life. Rather than chasing recognition, I have learned that awards, titles, and accomplishments come and go, but serving others with integrity creates lasting impact. It's a perspective that continues to guide my decisions and priorities today.

We love showing people Guatemala.

But that isn’t really why we lead volunteer vacations.

We want people to step outside their everyday lives. To learn from another culture. To serve alongside local families. To build genuine relationships. To see the world from a different perspective.

And then we want them to take that experience home.

Because becoming a global citizen isn’t about how many countries you’ve visited. 🌎

It’s about recognizing that we belong to something bigger than ourselves and choosing to take an active role in the world around us.

Come to Guatemala. Serve. Learn. Connect. And see what you bring home with you. ❤️

There’s a difference between visiting a place and truly experiencing it. 🇬🇹

On a Be Humanitarian volunteer vacation, you won’t spend your entire trip watching Guatemala through a bus window.

You’ll work alongside local families. Share meals. Participate in cultural experiences. Serve on community identified projects. Meet people you never would have met on a traditional vacation.

And yes, you’ll still have opportunities to enjoy the incredible beauty of Guatemala.

We want you to leave with more than pictures.

We want you to leave with relationships, perspective, gratitude, and stories you’ll be telling for years. ❤️

Where you travel matters.

But how you travel matters too. 🌎

When you travel with Be Humanitarian, we intentionally look for ways to keep tourism dollars within the communities we visit.

We hire local cooks, drivers, guides, and staff. We stay in locally owned accommodations and family homes. We eat meals prepared by community members and purchase supplies locally whenever possible.

That means your trip isn't only creating memories.

It’s supporting jobs, families, small businesses, and the local economy.

We believe travel can be a force for good when we choose to travel thoughtfully. ❤️

Installation day is exciting.

But what matters even more is what happens after we leave. 🌱

Our garden towers are designed to produce food for approximately nine years.

Families also receive hands-on education in planting, maintaining, and harvesting their gardens so they have the knowledge to continue growing fresh vegetables independently.

That’s what sustainability means to us.

Not simply meeting a need today, but giving families tools and knowledge they can continue using tomorrow.

One garden tower can represent years of harvests, meals, learning, and opportunity. 💚

Anyone can show up once.

The harder part is coming back. And then coming back again.

We’ve watched children who entered our programs as babies and toddlers grow into thriving students. We’ve watched mothers gain confidence and families become stronger. We’ve watched young women pursue university opportunities that once seemed out of reach.

Those stories weren’t created by one volunteer trip, one donation, or one project.

They were built over years.

We believe some of the most meaningful change happens simply because someone decides, “I’m still here.” 💚

🎓 You can be that consistent person in a child’s life:

When you see one of our garden towers, you might see vegetables growing.

We see so much more. 🌱

Before a garden ever reaches a family, local women help produce it. Families receive plants and materials along with hands-on education to learn how to plant, maintain, and harvest their food. Our local team continues following up and supporting families after installation.

The result isn’t simply fresh vegetables.

It’s knowledge. It’s employment. It’s greater food security. And it’s another tool a family can use to create a more sustainable future.

That’s why we say the garden is just the beginning. 💚
