Congratulations to The Wetherbee House - This month’s Historic Greenville Yard of the Month.
Completed circa 1880, the Wetherbee House is a graceful expression of the restrained elegance that characterized prosperous Delta residences in the decades following the Civil War. Its architecture draws from the vernacular Greek Revival tradition, with a long, dignified front porch supported by slender square columns, a strong horizontal cornice, and a deliberately balanced façade.
The steeply pitched front-facing gable gives the house a commanding vertical presence, while its simple weatherboard siding and tall, narrow windows preserve the refinement of nineteenth-century Southern domestic architecture without excessive ornamentation.
Deep green shutters provide a handsome counterpoint to the white exterior, emphasizing the impressive height of the windows and recalling an era when such shutters served both practical and architectural purposes. The result is a house of quiet distinction: stately rather than ostentatious, its beauty derived from proportion, symmetry, and craftsmanship.
The house subsequently evolved alongside Greenville itself, receiving additions around 1900 and again during the first half of the twentieth century before being restored to its pre-1900 appearance.
Also standing on the property is a 1½-story brick structure traditionally known as the carriage house, an uncommon surviving companion to the principal residence. Together, the buildings form a distinguished remnant of nineteenth-century Greenville, evoking the period when the young river city was emerging from Reconstruction and establishing the architectural character that would define its most gracious residential quarters. The home was listed with the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
