But honestly, most teenagers are still looking for exactly what younger children are looking for.

Consistency.
Belonging.

Many teens in foster care have experienced instability at the exact point in life where they are trying to figure out who they are becoming.

That is why ordinary family experiences matter so much.

Reunification is one of the most emotional parts of foster care, and often one of the most misunderstood.

When children are able to safely return home, it can bring happiness, relief, uncertainty, pride, sadness, and anxiety all at the same time for everyone involved.

Foster care is rarely black and white. It is people navigating incredibly difficult situations while trying to create the best possible outcomes for children.

May is National Foster Care Month.

You’ll see a lot of posts asking people to step forward and become foster parents. That matters. But there’s something just as important to say.

Foster care today is not about one person stepping in to help. It’s about being part of a system that supports children through some of the most complex moments of their lives.

In Virginia, that system includes social workers, foster parents, kinship carers, therapists, schools, and agencies all working together for the child.

Fostering is not about having all the answers. It’s about being willing to be part of a team, to learn, and to show up consistently.

That’s what children need. Not perfection. Stability.
