Heartland Farm We're a welcoming eco-center with alpacas, birds, organically-managed produce, & an arts center, plus nature trails & a prairie labyrinth. No pets please.

Call or email to schedule a visit. Open Tues-Sat, by appointment only on Monday and Sunday. Heartland Farm's Spiritual Retreat Center is a ministry of the Dominican Sisters of Peace who believe in the integration of mind, body, and spirit. We raise alpacas for their fleece and chickens for fresh farm eggs. We also grow produce in our gardens utilizing organically-sound methods. We welcome you to schedule a tour or retreat. View our website at http://heartlandfarm-ks.org to learn more. We also accept volunteers year round. Overnight volunteers work in exchange for free room and board. Heartland Farm is located 13 miles west of Great Bend, Kansas in rural Rush County. Surrounded by vistas of farms and the great sky, this beautiful setting offers space for retreat and renewal, study and prayer, learning and creative expression. The farm consists of an eighty acre homestead with organic gardens, crop lands and pastures, a prairie labyrinth and many trails. A wooded creek traverses the land and two ponds offer habitat for the native species that dwell here. We also have 2 straw bale buildings, one an art studio and the other a hermitage. See photos on our page. Heartland Farm is a ministry of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, a 501c3 non-profit organization.

We kicked off Indigenous Peoples’ Week tonight with our 2nd annual Indigenous Peoples’ Celebration. Greg Victors, the World Champion Wichita War Dancer, performed several dances, shared stories, educated us on Indigenous culture and answered some questions from the crowd. The crowd laughed, yelled, played music and danced along with him on this beautiful fall evening.

If you weren’t able to come tonight, check out Greg Victors' page to see more, or talk to him about performing at your school, wedding or other events.

Thank you again, Greg, for a wonderful performance!

It's Sustainable Sunday!

It's time to make the switch! Incandescent light bulbs use about 95% of their energy on heat, while only using 5% to produce light. LED bulbs are more energy efficient and waste very little energy on heat.

Led bulbs outlast all other types of light bulbs, giving you up to 25,000 hours of life. Incandescent bulbs average 12,000 hours of life. Switching to LED results in fewer replacements, which means fewer light bulbs in the landfill and more money in your wallet.

So turn your back on incandescent light bulbs and make the switch to LED!

This year we have been busy with the renovations of one of our cottages, Beech House. First, Cade Parr did another amazing job for us by replacing the floors. Then, we upgraded the composting toilet to make it more user friendly. Today we finally got to paint! Next is the fun part: decorating! Stay tuned to see what Beech House looks like when we're finished.

Beech House is one of 3 cottages at Heartland Farm. It is original to the property making it over 100 years old! It is thought to have been a wash house or summer kitchen before the property was purchased by the Dominican Sisters of Great Bend in 1987. Now it is a space for guests or volunteers to stay.

Interested in staying? Contact us at [email protected] or call (620)923-4585.

My DAF will care for our common home.

At Shepherd's Corner Ecology Center in Ohio, St. Catharine Farm in Kentucky and Heartland Farm in Kansas, our Sisters and partners put faith into action by caring for the land and inspiring others to live more sustainably.

From restoring wetlands to tending the soil, these ministries remind us that caring for creation is part of creating a more peaceful future.

Your generosity helps nurture places where people can reconnect with creation and discover new ways to care for our common home.

My DAF will help leave a healthier world for those who come next.

It's Sustainable Sunday!

A big way to make change is through support of your local farmers.

1. Food in the grocery store often travels thousands of miles over the course of several days to get from a farm to the store. Produce begins to lose nutritional value as soon as it’s harvested, meaning the produce at the store has less nutrition than locally purchased produce.

Purchasing local produce = fresher and more nutritional food

2. With the current climate crisis, food insecurity is becoming an increasing fear in many communities. When you shop locally you help farmers continue to operate during these difficult times. If natural disaster hits your area, local food will still be available if transport of goods to your grocery store is delayed.

Purchasing locally = food security in your community

3. Let’s not forget about the economy! When you make a purchase from a local farmer, your money stays in your community. That money contributes to economic stability and growth in the community.

Purchasing from local farmers = economic growth in your community

So next time your fridge is empty, take a trip to your local Farmer’s Market or check out https://shopkansasfarms.com/ to find local farmers before heading to the grocery store.

Yesterday we had a great group of women come together for the Power Tools for Women workshop. Sr. Jane taught everyone how to use multiple saws and drills, how to measure and pick out lumber, and safety protocols for power tools. Everyone left covered in sawdust and feeling confident in their ability to use power tools.

A big thank you to Sr. Jane for sharing her knowledge!

Check out our (nearly finished) raised garden bed!

What should Sr. Jane teach next?
