Graduation Day ✅

After 12 weeks, another cohort has completed their culinary training with us.

“This place is so great, I’ve learned so much.”

That’s something one of our graduates said during their last week, and it’s exactly what we hope participants leave with.

Although training has wrapped up, our doors are always open. Whether it’s stopping by for lunch or talking through next steps, we hope to continue being a resource long after graduation.

Stone Soup PDX 🤝 Nourish & Flourish

A few weeks ago, we had the chance to welcome the students, instructors and leaders from Nourish & Flourish Kitchen into our kitchen.

As two Portland culinary programs creating opportunity for people who haven’t always had equal access to them, it was meaningful to spend time together and learn from one another.

We loved showing them how our kitchen operates, discussing baking and book characters and learning about each other’s programming.

We’re looking forward to seeing their kitchen next!

Happy National Intern Day!

Today we’re celebrating our Portland Internship Experience intern, Sam!

Sam has spent the summer helping with our brand rollout, photography (which has seriously elevated our look), design, cafe promotions, and so much more.

Sam in a nutshell: Smart, thoughtful, and always ready to jump in.
Her only flaw: She had never seen Cheaper by the Dozen. Thankfully, that’s now required before her internship ends. 😂

Here’s what Sam had to say about her experience:
“I didn’t expect to feel this at home this fast. The Stone Soup team has been so welcoming, and I’m learning something new every day. Getting to work alongside people who are this kind and this passionate is honestly the best part of my day! I’ve learned so much and I am so excited to keep growing!”

A look inside our Tier 2 class. 🌮

Every cohort gets the chance to make birria tacos from scratch. It’s one of our biggest lessons; covering braising, handmade tortilla making, working the hot line, and building complex flavors.

It’s always a rewarding class and one of our favorites.

Have you heard about Stone Soup PDX Cafe?

When you visit our cafe, you’ll find participants learning, cooking, and preparing your food and coffee alongside our chef instructors and baristas. This hands-on experience builds their skills and gives them a real sense of what it’s like to work in a professional kitchen as they prepare for employment after the program.

All proceeds go directly back into our programming, helping us provide more training opportunities for people overcoming barriers to employment.

Stone Soup PDX is a free 12-week culinary training program for people facing barriers to employment.

Throughout the program, participants progress through three tiers of hands-on training, building culinary skills while preparing for meaningful employment.

Along the way, participants receive individualized support and resources, including TriMet cards, new kitchen shoes, and other tools to help remove barriers. They also earn a stipend throughout the program to help offset expenses while they train.
