💗💚🩵 Today is Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day!
Metastatic breast cancer (MBC), also known as Stage 4 breast cancer, occurs when cancer spreads beyond the breast to other parts of the body. There is currently no cure.

Tonight, as part of the campaign, more than 325 landmarks across 196 cities worldwide will illuminate in pink, teal and green, honoring those we’ve lost and standing in solidarity with everyone affected by MBC.

These colors represent so much more than awareness:
💗 PINK — Where the cancer originated, in the breast.
🩵 TEAL — Healing and spirituality
💚 GREEN — Hope and life

Every illuminated landmark is an opportunity to start a conversation about metastatic breast cancer and the urgent need for research.

MEET THE METAVIVOR GRANT RECIPIENT: DAVID ENTENBERG, PhD! ✨
We are honored to highlight Dr. David Entenberg of Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the important metastatic breast cancer research he is advancing through a METAvivor Translational Award. 💗💙💚

His research project, “Quantifying and Controlling Tumor Cell Re-Dissemination in Metastatic Breast Cancer,” explores how cancer cells may leave an established metastatic tumor and spread to additional areas of the body—and how that process might ultimately be controlled.

This METAvivor grant was funded by the Ambassador Team in loving memory of Jessica Moore and all those whose lives have been lost too soon to MBC.
We are honored to have David Entenberg share his expertise and shine a brighter light on the research working to develop better treatments and more options for people living with metastatic breast cancer.

Day 12

METAvivor was in Washington, D.C. last week for the Stage IV Stampede & Summit (Stay tuned for more info about participating in our MBC Ground Swell initiative in February – no travel is required!). Patient advocates met with legislators to continue working to pass the bipartisan “Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act” which would fast-track disability and federal healthcare benefits for the MBC community. Currently individuals must wait up to 24 months to enroll in Medicare AFTER waiting 5 months to receive Social Security Disability Insurance benefits. During this arbitrary waiting period, many MBC patients face incredible hardships in supporting themselves and may potentially experience disruption in care that can lead to further disease progression and even death. The median life expectancy for an individual diagnosed with MBC averages about 3 years, meaning many diagnosed with MBC may never actually receive the SSDI and Medicare benefits they are eligible for because they don’t outlive these waiting periods.

Federal programs that allow patients to bypass these waiting periods require that a condition be fatal within 6 months in 95% of cases, an impossibly high standard that will only be harder to reach as treatment options improve with research. MBC patients are penalized and care is jeopardized as a result of medical breakthroughs and improvements in life expectancy. Simply put, under current federal guidelines the average 36 months life expectancy post-diagnosis means MBC patients are living “too long” to get the benefits we need NOW.

Don’t ignore stage IV.

Day 11

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide. In 2020 alone, the WHO reported 2.3 million new cases and 685,000 deaths. Today, it remains the leading cause of cancer death for women in most countries, and the second leading cause in the U.S. (after lung cancer).

Ribbons in October aren’t enough. We need metastatic research to deliver effective, well-tolerated treatments—and save lives around the world.

Don’t ignore stage IV.

Day 10 - Breast Cancer Under 40

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women aged 15–39, with 250,000 young women in the U.S. living with a diagnosis today. Younger patients are more often diagnosed late stage, with aggressive subtypes, and face higher risk of metastasis.

Each year, 1,000+ women under 40 die from metastatic breast cancer (MBC)—and de novo cases (metastatic from the start) are rising. Yet research for this age group remains underfunded.

If you’re under 40, trust your body. Lumps, swelling, ni**le changes, rashes, bone pain, headaches, or vision issues that persist should never be dismissed as “too young.”

There is no such thing as too young for MBC. We need more research to save young lives. Don’t ignore Stage IV.
