✨GRRACE Success Story✨

“This past spring we adopted Deuce, whom we renamed Goose. He is a silly one year old who is now enjoying life to the fullest with his two brothers. But when he came to GRRACE, he was afraid of everything, including walking on grass. Goose needed another dog in the home to teach him walking on grass and wood floors was okay. And scary noises, like the toaster popping and microwave beeping, were also not scary. Our four year old Golden was the perfect dog for that task. And now the two of them are wrestling buddies. Goose is hilarious with his signature move of sitting on his opponent’s head. We called it, “getting Goosed.”

Goose loves running circles in the fenced backyard, playing fetch, and giving kisses to whomever he meets. He is such a sweet, silly boy which is how he got his new name. As his fear has subsided and his personality is shining through, he is a silly goose.

Our story is unique as it began with the wrong Chewy order and Chewy requesting us to donated it to a shelter. In searching for nearby shelters, we came across GRRACE. As an owner and lover of Goldens, of course, I had to look at the Goldens for adoption. This led to an immediate application submission which ultimately led us to adopting Deuce/Goose. He’s been the perfect addition to our family and we couldn’t be more grateful for Chewy’s mistake.”

🚨FOSTERS NEEDED!

As a foster and volunteer-based rescue, we rely on compassionate dog lovers to open their hearts and homes to Goldens on the first stop of their GRRACE journey. We cannot say yes to dogs in need without more foster homes!

If you’ve considered fostering, now is the time. Oftentimes, these dogs have never experienced a warm home or loving touch, and fosters get the opportunity to help rehab these pups and show them the life they truly deserve. Many GRRACE Goldens are ultimately adopted by their foster (a foster win, as we say!), which can happen if GRRACE and the foster determine it’s the best fit for the dog 💛

If you’re here, you understand the spirit of rescue so we are asking you to please open your heart and home to a Golden in need - and share with others! We are in need of homes both with dogs and without, and no prior foster experience is needed - we’ll train you and help you every step of the way 🐾

A few requirements to foster with GRRACE:

🌽You must be a resident of Indiana
❌👶🏻No human kids under age 5
🏡Structural fences preferred but not required
🧑‍💻An adult who is home often is preferred but not required

🐾 TODAY IS NATIONAL CHECK THE CHIP DAY! 🐾

All GRRACE dogs are microchipped before adoption, but in 2024 we discovered something that surprised us: more than 155 adopted GRRACE dogs - some adopted as far back as 2019 - still had their chips registered to GRRACE instead of their adopters!

It took two months of emails, calls, texts, letters and even a few knocks on doors to get our registry cleaned up. Since July 2024, GRRACE has actively managed our chip registrations to help make sure adopters complete their transfers.

But even after a chip is properly registered, there are TWO things every pet owner should remember:

📱 CHECK THE REGISTRATION.
Have you moved? Changed phone numbers? Changed your email address? Make sure your pet’s microchip registry has your CURRENT contact information. A microchip won’t help a shelter reach you if the phone number connected to it no longer works.

🩺 CHECK THE CHIP.
Ask your veterinarian to scan your pet’s microchip during a routine appointment to make sure it can be detected. Microchip problems are rare, but chips can move from their original location and, occasionally, may not be detected when scanned.

GRRACE has experienced this firsthand with two puppies whose previously implanted microchips could not later be found, even after being checked at multiple veterinary clinics.

So today, take a few minutes to CHECK THE CHIP!

✅ Confirm your pet’s chip registration
✅ Update your contact information
✅ Ask your vet to scan the chip at your pet’s next visit
✅ Make it an annual habit

Those few minutes could be what helps bring your best friend home someday. 💛🐾

🐾 BREED SPOTLIGHT: THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER 🐾

Who doesn't love a Golden Retriever?! Known for their beautiful golden coats, friendly faces, playful personalities, and eagerness to please, Goldens have earned their place as one of America's most beloved breeds.
Originally developed in Scotland in the 1800s as hardworking gundogs, Golden Retrievers were bred to retrieve waterfowl for hours on end. Today, they continue to shine as working dogs, service dogs, search-and-rescue partners, obedience competitors, and—of course—beloved family companions.
They are typically energetic, intelligent, playful, and eager to learn. And that puppy-like enthusiasm? Many Goldens carry it well into adulthood! 🎾💦

And speaking of beautiful Goldens… meet Jade and Mae!

These two gentle 4-year-old Golden Retriever sisters have spent their lives together and adore one another. While keeping them together would be a dream come true, they do not have to be adopted as a pair. As much as we would love to see them stay together, we have not had any luck with that and understand that adopting two large dogs isn't possible for every family.

Both girls are thriving in a loving foster home alongside other canine pals. They are potty trained, do well either in their x-pen or loose in the home, and have been working hard on building their confidence while walking on leash. Their foster says they surprise her every day with the progress they make and that they truly balance each other out.

Jade and Mae are both shy when meeting new people and will need patient adopters who understand that trust takes time. Once they settle in, you'll discover two incredibly sweet and loving girls who enjoy the company of other dogs and are learning that the world isn't such a scary place.

If adopted separately, they will need a confident, friendly large-breed dog in the home to help show them the ropes and continue building their confidence.

🐾 Mae has a heart murmur, but her echocardiogram showed that her heart is structurally normal and functioning well. Her murmur is caused by a mild condition that is not expected to cause significant issues in the future. She also has mild Grade 1 elbow arthritis that isn't affecting her mobility. Daily joint supplements would likely help keep her comfortable.

🐾 Jade has moderate hip dysplasia in her right hip. Thankfully, it isn't affecting the way she walks or her quality of life. She would also benefit from daily joint supplements to support her joints long-term.

These girls don't need perfection. They simply need kind, patient people willing to give them the time they need to blossom.
There is something incredibly special about watching a shy dog gain confidence, learn to trust, and discover that the world can be a wonderful place. Jade and Mae are so deserving of that chance.

🌟GRRACE Success Story🌟

“Toward the end of January, our world changed in a way we weren’t ready for. We lost our best boy, Murphy, our sweet golden, to aggressive cancer. We were completely heartbroken, and our home felt so empty without him.

We’ve fostered with GRRACe before, so I still followed along with their posts. Around that same time, a neighbor was fostering a brand new litter of golden puppies. It caught my attention, but I wasn’t sure I was ready. Still, it stayed in the back of my mind, especially when she mentioned they’d be ready at the end of February.

We were deep in grief, missing Murphy every day, but little by little the idea of opening our hearts again didn’t feel so impossible. As a family, we started talking about it, even tossing around names just for fun. At one point, someone said “Fernando,” and we all thought that was adorable.

I filled out an application… “just in case”.

A few days later, I got a call. That same litter had a couple puppies placed elsewhere, and we were chosen for one. I connected with Nicole, who is truly one of the most wonderful humans you could ever hope to meet, and who pours so much love into every single puppy she fosters. I asked about the calmer of the two boys, and without hesitation she said, “His name is Fernando.”

You. Have. To. Be. Kidding. Me! It felt like the sweetest little Godwink, like Murphy had a hand in sending him our way.

On February 20th we brought him home, and from the very first moment, he filled our home with light, laughter, joy, and yes, a little bit of puppy chaos.

He hasn’t replaced Murphy, nothing ever could, but he has helped mend our hearts in the sweetest way.

We are so incredibly grateful to GRRACe and to Nicole, our puppy fairy godmother, for trusting us with him and giving us the chance to love again.”

✨GRRACE Success Story✨

“A little about our story...I lost my 13 year old golden, Maggie, very suddenly last August. I knew I couldn’t live without a golden retriever (not being dramatic at all!), but I wanted to be intentional about finding just the right dog. In the fall, I fostered a puppy from a local shelter, and while I adored him, I wasn’t ready for a puppy after so long with a senior dog. I signed up as a foster with GRRACE and waited anxiously to get “the call”. In December, I learned about Egon, a two-year-old boy with the sweetest personality who was looking for a foster home. Of course I said yes. I truly did not intend to adopt the first dog that I fostered, but when he came running through my front door I knew I was a goner!

Egon (who also goes by Eegy Peegy, Eegs, Mr. Boy, etc.) has been one of the best things to ever happen to me. He is the sweetest, most cuddly dog in the entire world. The only thing he loves more than running in his backyard is standing up on the back of the couch looking for friends out the front window. He loves his stuffed animals, watching dogs on TV, and curling up next to me when it’s time for bed. I officially adopted him in February, and in March when the weather was nicer, I threw a “Gotcha Paw-ty” for him. Four of his new doggie best buds and lots of human friends came over to play and celebrate our sweet, handsome boy. I am so lucky to have found Egon and so thankful for GRRACE and the amazing volunteers who work so hard to make stories like this happen.”
