This 1st year coopers hawk had a bad collision with either a plate glass window or a vehicle about a week ago. Nursing time and good food helped. Freedom Day was yesterday late afternoon! Went right up into a tree, and started assessing options. Perfect.

The great blue heron from Welch that had it's break tangled in fishing line is making up for lost meals!!! It is so excited for food that Caleb had to give it a second water bowl. The reason? The heron felt like it had to be standing in water in order to eat the given fish! Soooo...1 water bowl for the heron, 1 for the fish. Today this heron moves out to the flight barn! It is doing really well!!

Our “Wings of Wonder: WV Birds of Prey” program is coming to Kanawha State Forest this Saturday, September 19 at 2 PM! The event is free, open to the public and great for all ages. Come meet 6 native WV wild bird Ambassadors close up, including live owls, falcons, a raven, hawk and our bald eagle Regis. Learn about the habitats they live in, the foods they eat, their unique abilities and the dangers they face. Pick up pro-active tips for helping wild birds and get a chance to ask questions during this award-winning interactive program. Meet on the Nature Center lawn, and remember to bring a chair or blanket to sit on!

Its been a busy few days here at TRAC! We're working with a great blue heron from Welch who was found starving with fishing line tangled around his beak and face. The rescuers got the fishing line off and got him to us. He is eating very well, making up for lost mealtimes! A coopers hawk went free back in Charleston yesterday and these two red tailed hawks headed out as well. The younger one (no red tail) is from Gandeeville. Good strong flight!

This young ceadar waxwing jumped out of the nest in Hinton a week early. He wasn't ready to fly yet. The finder grabbed him and brought him to us. He went free on Friday and immediately started eating poke berries - after he found out after trying to yell at them to jump in his mouth!

Wild bird rehabilitation has its great days, not so great days and horrible days. Yesterday was a horrible day. We were capturing the wood stork from the flyway to go get a Veterinary Certificate of Health so he could go across State lines. The wood stork jumped off his perch gave four strong wing flaps and collided head on with one of the flyway rafters (12 feet up). There was nothing we could do. He quickly died. He is buried now, and we are all still in a state of shock. Thank you so very much to WaterDawg Outdoors on the ByPass in Hinton for their help and support, as well as the Tate Lohr Fish Hatchery in Oakvale for letting us stockpile culls over pervious months. We have another weekend of programming this weekend! We will be presenting our Wings of Wonder program at 1 pm at the National Fish Hatchery in White Sulphur Springs, then on Sunday we will be presenting the program at 11 am at the Community Building at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. Bring your family and friends! Both programs are free and open to the public.

The young broadwing hawk from Chapmanville (Logan county) and this young red shouldered hawk from Hurricane became good friends in the flight barn and went out together well! Thank you to Research & /Rehab Tech Alisha Segars and her awesome kids for the double release.
