CAPE (www.capeanimals.org) works to alleviate animal suffering through rescue and education. In 2012 CAPE opened a new burro sanctuary in Grass Valley, Ca.

The Center for Animal Protection and Education (CAPE) works to save the lives of individual animals who are older or have special needs and to educate people about ways in which they can change their own lives to alleviate animal suffering. CAPE was founded in 1992 by JP Novic and a group of caring individuals with a wide variety of professional experience in animal welfare and protection. Over the years, CAPE has cared for and rescued thousands of animals. CAPE's Foster Care Program provides sanctuary for rescued animals who are older, injured or recovering from an illness. These animals are placed into new, loving homes through CAPE's Adoption Program. CAPE also sponsors, supports and produces Education Programs designed to inform people about issues animals face in society today. Also at the sanctuary are goats, pigs, chickens, cats and dogs. CAPE is also proud to present the annual Animal Film Festival (AFF). AFF aims to bring awareness about the realities animals face in the world today. The stories showcased in documentary and feature films will be engaging, funny, edgy, beautiful and inspirational. The festival seeks to explore topics about companion animals, wildlife, animals in entertainment, farming, and laboratories. We are looking for films that highlight ways our society celebrates our relationships with non humans, as well as films showing the ways we mistreat them. Animal Film Festival aims to not only entertain audiences but to propel people into action to change their own lives as well as the animals effected. CAPE's philosophy affirms that animals have the right to a long, full life, free from pain and suffering.

Meet Rugor! 🐶♥️
Rugor is an 8-year-old, 95-pound hound mix with soulful eyes, impossibly soft ears, and a heart full of love. One of our CAPE volunteers recently fostered Rugor through the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Santa Cruz Animal Shelter and absolutely adored him, so we’re sharing this courtesy post to help him find his forever home!

13 years old, Tempa found herself at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter after her beloved human companion became terminally ill and could no longer care for her. Frightened and struggling with mobility issues, Tempa also had a bleeding mass at the base of her tail. Her medical needs were significant, and finding a new home would be a challenge.

Thanks to the wonderful staff at the SC Shelter and our CAPE team in SC, Tempa got her second chance! 🐾 Today, she’s safe and loved in CAPE’s Foster Care Program. She’s had surgery to remove two masses, and we’re thrilled both were benign!

Help Tempa and other animals in need receive the veterinary care they deserve. Together, we can make sure no animal goes without care when they need it most. ❤️

Basic Animal Supplies

Tink's neurological condition doesn't stop her from enjoying an afternoon playdate with her sister, Belle! She may take a little longer to reach her playful target, but that never stops her from joining in the fun. (And Belle remains pateint as ever.)

Tink joined our Assisted Living program in 2024, and watching her thrive has been such a joy. She's surrounded by a loving family who embraces her exactly as she is, ensuring she has everything she needs to live a happy, fulfilling life.

Thank you to our community who have followed Tink's story and supported her journey in CAPE's Asissted Living program. We couldn't do this work and help dogs like Tink without you 🩷

We love a transformation!
A few months ago Ned was suffering from severe mange, an old hip fracture, a severely untreated broken femur, and X-rays later revealed his body was filled with buckshot from a sh***un. Ned spent some time recovering from surgery and receiving expert medical care at Muttopia with CAPE's rescue partners at Compassion Without Borders. He is now living his best life with his new forever family ♥ We are so happy for you Ned!

Did you know the Fourth of July is one of the busiest times of the year for veterinary emergency hospitals? There are many dangers for our furry family members during a noisy holiday. Here are a few ways to protect them:
🐶 Keep pets safely indoors during fireworks and festivities.
🏷️ Make sure ID tags are secure and their microchip information is up to date.
🍇 Keep unsafe foods like chocolate, grapes, onions, and alcohol well out of reach.
🏡 Set up a quiet, comfortable space where anxious pets can relax away from the noise.
💙 If your pet struggles with fireworks anxiety, talk to your veterinarian before the holiday about ways to help.

When Bentley entered CAPE's Foster Program, we were sure he'd be adopted right away. With his sweet personality, adorable vocal chirps, and signature full-body tail wag, how could anyone resist?

But Bentley waited...

And waited... And waited...

What began as foster care has become Assisted Living care, one of CAPE's specialized programs for animals with complex medical needs.

As the months went on, we learned that Bentley's medical needs were far more complex than anyone expected. Diagnosing and treating Bentley's pulmonary hypertension and heart rhythm disorder has already cost nearly $4,000 in veterinary care, and he will require ongoing monitoring and medication to keep him comfortable for the rest of his life.
