Have you heard about CAPNA's Poverty Simulation Program?
This interactive experience is designed to help participants better understand the challenges faced by individuals and families living with limited financial resources. The simulation is divided into four 15-minute segments, each representing one week in a month.
Through realistic scenarios, participants must navigate difficult decisions while balancing responsibilities such as paying bills, securing childcare, managing transportation, responding to eviction notices, and meeting their family's basic needs. In just one hour, participants gain valuable insight into the daily realities that many families face.
One participant shared:
"While I have never truly been in this situation, I did grow up poor. We were one slip away from possibly facing dire circumstances. This small exercise truly opened my eyes to what my parents may have faced while I was growing up. I would recommend this program to EVERYONE."
The Poverty Simulation challenges assumptions, builds empathy, and encourages meaningful conversations about poverty and the barriers many families encounter. Facilitators Angela Wigington and Deborah Cottingham bring more than 20 years of combined experience at CAPNA and are passionate about helping others better understand the communities they serve.
