🏠🔑 WELCOME HOME – CELEBRATING 6 MONTHS OF SUCCESS! 🎉
At Halifax Urban Ministries (HUM), success isn’t just helping someone move into housing—it’s helping them stay housed and build the skills needed to remain independent long after program assistance ends.
Today, we’re proud to celebrate two individuals who have remained successfully housed for more than six months! Their housing stability is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and commitment to the case management process.
This household secured a safe and affordable two-bedroom apartment for $1,155 per month, allowing them to share expenses and create a sustainable housing plan that fits within their income.
A special thank you to First Look Property Management, an incredible community partner that continues to help individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness find stable housing opportunities. Their partnership has made a meaningful difference for many in our community.
One of the key components of our program is HUM’s sliding-scale rental assistance model. Rather than providing assistance indefinitely, support gradually decreases over time while participants build financial independence. This allows households to adjust to paying more of their rent each month while developing healthy budgeting habits and preparing for long-term success.
Over the past six months, our case management team has worked closely with this household to:
✅ Review and update monthly budgets
✅ Develop savings goals
✅ Learn the Envelope Budgeting Method
✅ Reduce unnecessary spending
✅ Build an emergency fund
✅ Create a long-term housing sustainability plan
Participants also received materials from Financial Peace University, including the Baby Steps Program, which focuses on saving, budgeting, and creating a strong financial foundation.
Additionally, our team is helping create weekly meal plans and grocery budgets. HUM provides grocery support while teaching strategies to reduce food costs, avoid excessive delivery expenses, and maximize every dollar available for rent, utilities, and savings.
This success story demonstrates that housing plus case management equals results. By combining affordable housing, financial literacy, budgeting support, accountability, and structured rental assistance, participants are better prepared to succeed when assistance ends.
Six months later, this household remains housed, stable, and moving steadily toward self-sufficiency—and that’s exactly the outcome we strive for every day.
