Every spring, we get calls from people who want raccoons “removed” from their property.
What many people don’t realize is that this almost always means babies are involved.
A mother raccoon is not just “living in your attic.” She is raising a family. She knows every cry her babies make. She will search for them endlessly if they disappear. And when they are trapped or relocated, those babies are often left behind to slowly starve, dehydrate, or wander alone.
Watch this reunion carefully. Look at how quickly she responds to them. Look at how they run to her. This is not instinct without emotion. This is a mother finding her babies.
Relocating raccoons is illegal in many places, including Michigan, and for good reason. It is incredibly stressful, separates families, spreads disease, and frequently leads to orphaned wildlife.
Please think twice before trapping wildlife this spring.
If you have raccoons on your property, humane eviction and delayed exclusion methods exist that allow families to move along safely together. A few extra weeks of patience can save lives.
They are not pests to their babies.
They are mom.
