Meet our oh-so-opinionated Jar Jar! Jar Jar arrived earlier this year with 14 more Straw-coloured fruit bats (aka African fruit bats). These elderly folks were retired here from a northern zoo.
Jar Jar loves treats but very much does not appreciate being held in a towel, and he doesn't mind squawking at you to make his point! However, if we take him by his toes and let him grip our fingers, Jar Jar is a perfect gentleman for getting cleaned, medicated, and fed.
All of these Africans are older, and many had to enter our geriBATric ward upon arrival. But, rather than roosting with our established African colony, their friends in our fruit bat general population chose to roost close to the geribatric ward.
At night, it's a party around the megabat geriBATric enclosure! It speaks volumes to the social complexities in the relationships bats form within their colony, with other bats, and with other species.
