Caring for the Caregivers 💙

August is National Wellness Awareness Month, a reminder that caring for others also means making space to care for ourselves.

For professionals who support individuals and families through pregnancy and infant loss, the work can be deeply meaningful, but it can also carry an emotional weight. Compassion, presence, and empathy require energy, and caregivers deserve that same compassion in return.

This month, PLIDA encourages caregivers to:
🌿 Give yourself permission to rest
💗 Practice self-kindness and grace
🤝 Lean on colleagues, friends, and your support system
☕ Make time for the things that restore and replenish you
💬 Check in with yourself as intentionally as you check in with others

Caring for yourself isn't separate from the work you do—it helps sustain your ability to continue doing it with compassion.
To every caregiver who shows up for families during some of their most difficult moments: thank you for the care, comfort, and support you provide. And remember—you deserve care, too.

An Interdisciplinary Approach to Trauma-Informed Perinatal Care Across the Antepartum, Intrapartum and Postpartum Continuum presented by Sandra Uribe, BSN, RN

REGISTER: https://www.plida.org/sept-24-2026-webinar

Session Description:
Pregnancy and childbirth following loss can be accompanied by profound fear, grief, and emotional vulnerability, even when an unborn baby is healthy, the pregnancy is progressing well, and clinical outcomes are reassuring. The anticipation of welcoming another child may bring renewed hope - while also intensifying grief, triggering traumatic memories, and heightening fears.

This PLIDA webinar highlights the essential role of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing the unique needs of patients navigating pregnancy and birth after profound trauma and significant personal loss. Through a compelling case study, participants will explore the multifaceted, interconnected clinical, psychological, and personal dimensions of evidence-based, trauma-informed, whole-person care. The presentation will demonstrate how an individualized plan of care - grounded in safety, empathy, respect, and compassionate support - can empower patients, foster resilience and hope, enhance maternal well-being, and contribute to positive outcomes for mothers and babies.

About the Presenter:
Sandra Uribe, BSN, RN has dedicated more than 40 years to caring for women with high-risk pregnancies at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas. Throughout her career, she has served in a variety of leadership and clinical roles, including staff nurse in the Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit, Nursing Clinical Manager, and Nursing Director for Women’s Services.

Sandra currently serves as the Maternal Fetal Medicine Nurse Navigator/Patient Care Coordinator, where she partners with physicians and the interdisciplinary healthcare team to coordinate comprehensive care for high-risk obstetric patients from the time of referral through delivery, discharge, and follow-up. She is passionate about providing compassionate, patient-centered care and developing innovative approaches that address the complex emotional and psychosocial needs of women and families experiencing high-risk pregnancies and perinatal loss.

"The care you give others starts with the care you give yourself."

Thursday is International Self-Care Day and you can never drink from an empty cup. Here are some ideas to recharge.

🌿 Encourage Five Minutes of Stillness
Take five uninterrupted minutes to pause. That might mean sitting outside, enjoying a cup of coffee while it's still hot, listening to calming music, or simply taking a few deep breaths between patients.

💙 Write Yourself a Note of Compassion
Take a moment to write down one thing they're proud of and one kind message to yourself.
"I made a difference today."
"I don't have to carry every burden alone."
"I'm doing meaningful work."

🕯️ Create a Moment of Reflection
Invite your colleagues to light an LED candle or spend a minute in quiet reflection to honor the babies and families they've cared for—and to recognize the emotional work you carry.

☕ Take a moment to grab coffee or tea, walk around for a few minutes alone to reset mentally and physically.

💌 Send a Thank You
Take two minutes today to thank someone whose compassion has inspired you. Peer recognition can be incredibly meaningful!

🌸 Practice "Permission"
One of the biggest challenges for bereavement professionals is feeling like they always need to be available. Allow yourself permission to:
- Leave work on time.
- Take a lunch break.
- Ask for support.
- Say no when appropriate.
- Schedule time off without guilt.

❤️ Start a "Self-Care Challenge"
Here are a few little ideas to get started on self-care...
☐ Drink enough water
☐ Take three deep breaths before meeting with the next family
☐ Step outside for fresh air
☐ Eat lunch away from my desk
☐ Thank a coworker
☐ Stretch for five minutes
☐ Leave work on time
☐ Do one thing that brings me joy

🌼 Reflect on Your "Why"
Ask yourself.. "What keeps you coming back to this work?"
Compassion
Hope
Service
Families
Healing
Love
Connection
Jot down the Why's...

🤝 Encourage Connection
Self-care doesn't have to be done alone. Not only today, but anytime -
Call a friend.
Have lunch with a coworker.
Debrief after a difficult case.
Reach out to someone who understands the unique challenges of bereavement care.
