October Is a Time to Speak Up: Bullying Prevention and Young People’s Mental Health Go Hand in Hand
Aston, Pa. — October 6, 2026 — October’s National Bullying Prevention Month is a reminder that every young person deserves to feel safe, respected, and included—in school, online, and in the community. Dr. Claudio V. Cerullo, co-founder of TeachAntiBullying.org and a national anti-bullying and mental health expert, is urging families, schools, and community leaders to make prevention and support a shared responsibility.
“Bullying is more than an isolated incident between students. It can affect a young person’s sense of safety, belonging, and emotional well-being,” said Cerullo. “We need to listen when young people speak up, respond with care, and make sure they know where to turn for help. Prevention starts when adults and peers take concerns seriously.”
Bullying can happen face to face or through phones and social media. Creating safer environments takes ongoing effort: teaching students how to seek help and safely support one another, responding consistently to harmful behavior, and ensuring that young people can connect with trusted adults and mental health support.
“Awareness matters most when it leads to action,” Cerullo added. “Parents, educators, students, and community organizations all have a role. A kind word, a report to a trusted adult, or a timely check-in can help a young person feel less alone.”
Cerullo’s work through TeachAntiBullying.org includes education, community outreach, and initiatives such as Sneakers for Smiles, which has donated more than 3,600 pairs of sneakers to young people. The effort reflects a broader commitment to helping children feel supported and included.
As part of this month’s call to action, Cerullo encourages schools and community groups to promote kindness and inclusion, discuss the effects of bullying, share ways to report concerns, and connect students and families with available support. PACER’s Unity Day, the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month, will be observed on October 21, 2026.
