Have you registered for the One City One Story virtual conversation with author Chandreyee Lahiri on Thursday, October 21 at 6pm? Head to the link below to register. In the meantime, you can prepare for the event by considering the following discussion questions about "Dumba Chora":
📚If you had been on the boat, how would you have reacted to the news that “only high tide can free this boat from Dumba Chora” at midnight?
📚How does the relationship between Sutapa and Shekhar develop over the course of the story? What do you think of the couple?
📚Sutapa and Shekhar discover they have more in common than they had previously thought. Have you ever altered your original impressions of someone or become close to someone despite expectations?
📚What do you think about the different experiences Rehman has had in comparison to Shekhar’s and Sutapa’s lives? How do these differences parallel class differences in the United States?
📚What does the tiger’s appearance represent in response to the backstories of Shekhar and Sutapa?
What do you make of the end of the story? Is it happy? What questions do you still have at the end of the story?
📚What does “Dumba Chora” reveal about Bengali culture that you may not have known before? How does it challenge cultural stereotypes or your understanding?
Think about. your answers, and we'll see you there!
