Suffolk County SPCA Offers $2,000 Reward Following Severe Animal Cruelty Incident in Deer Park, NY

Suffolk County, NY — The Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for a severe act of animal cruelty at Geiger Park Lake in Deer Park, NY.

While responding to a complaint regarding numerous e-bikes in Geiger Park, Town of Babylon Park Rangers were alerted to a turtle trapped inside a cage secured with zip ties and submerged underwater.

Upon pulling the cage from the lake, Rangers discovered that the turtle had a fishhook stuck in its mouth and had been tethered inside the enclosure, preventing any chance of escape.

The turtle was immediately rescued on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at 3:30 pm and was transported to the West Islip Veterinary Hospital for emergency evaluation and medical treatment.

Bellport Man Charged with Animal Cruelty

Suffolk County, NY — The Suffolk County SPCA has charged a Bellport resident with animal cruelty following an investigation into the neglect and abuse of a dog.

Roy Gross, Chief of the Suffolk County SPCA, announced that Cecilio D. Mattews, 50, of Bellport, has been charged with one misdemeanor and one violation counts of animal cruelty under the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law and four misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty under the Suffolk County Code.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred in August 2026, during which time investigators determined that Matthews failed to provide adequate care for his ten-year-old male gray mixed breed dog, "Seven". As a result of the neglect, Seven was found to be underweight, infested with flies, and exhibited open wounds to his ears and neck.

Seven is currently receiving the necessary medical treatment at a local animal shelter.

August 24, 2026, SPCA detectives issued Matthews a Field Appearance Ticket. He is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on September 11, 2026.

A Tribute to the Veterinarians of 9/11

The Suffolk County SPCA proudly honors the 196 veterinarians who answered the call following the attacks of September 11, 2001, and dedicated their time, skill, and compassion to the working dogs who served at Ground Zero.

The courageous K-9s worked tirelessly alongside their handlers and first responders, searching through the devastation and providing comfort during one of our nation’s darkest moments.

Behind every working dog was a team of professionals who cared for their health and well-being. The veterinarians who treated and monitored these heroic animals played an important role in supporting their mission.

We remember, we honor, and we thank you.

To the veterinarians who cared for the 9/11 working dogs, your service and compassion will never be forgotten.

Yesterday, we had the privilege of participating in National Night Out as guests of the Suffolk County Sheriff.

It was a wonderful opportunity to meet members of the community, answer questions, and educate the public about the work the Suffolk County SPCA does every day to protect animals throughout Suffolk County.

We want to thank everyone who stopped by our table, spoke with us, and helped make this special event a success.
