Lichen, a symbiotic organism composed of fungi and algae, is a prominent and ecologically significant component of Southern Utah's desert landscape. Thriving in this harsh environment, lichens are incredibly resilient, capable of withstanding extreme temperatures, intense sunlight, and long periods of drought. In Southern Utah, they are particularly noticeable for their varied colors and forms, decorating rocks and soil surfaces with hues of orange, yellow, green, and gray. These organisms play a crucial role in their ecosystems, contributing to soil formation by breaking down rock surfaces through chemical weathering and providing essential nutrients to the soil.
