On April 3rd, 2025, retired four-star Gen. Tim D. Haugh was fired from his position as Director of the National Security Agency/Chief and Commander of the U.S. Cyber Command, along with his civilian deputy Wendy Noble. American far-right political activist and internet personality Laura Loomer called for Haugh’s firing online stating that Haugh had been “disloyal” to President Trump. Following a meeting between Loomer and President Trump, Haugh was fired. Loomer described his dismissal as a “blessing for the American people” (CBS).

Since the firings, Gen. Joshua M. Rudd now serves as Commander of the U.S. Cyber Command and Director of National Security Agency/Chief, Central Security Service. Gen. Rudd previously served as the Deputy Commander for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, Chief of Staff and Commander of Special Operations Command Pacific, and served as a Special Forces Officer.

Tim Kosiba now serves as Deputy Director of the National Security Agency. Kosiba previously served as Deputy Commander of NSA/CSS Georgia, as well as a variety of leadership roles in NSA, U.S. Cyber Command and the FBI.

On May 20, 2026, the Los Angeles World Affairs Council had the honor of partnering with the U.A.E. Consulate General in Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation for “Doing Business with the U.A.E.: Continuity, Resilience, and Opportunity”.

This event featured the U.A.E. Consul General to Los Angeles, Hessa Alshuwaihi, followed by an industry panel featuring senior executives from leading U.S. tourism and entertainment companies with a growing presence in the U.A.E (Executive Director of the U.A.E. Trade and Investment Office Karim Gamal, and SeaWorld Vice President of Zoological Operations Eric Otjen).

The event focused on the UAE’s economy, the growth of bilateral commercial ties between the US and UAE, and the UAE’s long term goals of innovation, investment, and economic diversification. The UAE is increasingly investing in industries such as artificial intelligence, life sciences, finance, logistics, tourism, and advanced technologies, in addition to oil. Business operations have persisted despite heightened regional tension in the Middle East, as well as attacks on infrastructure in the region. As the UAE diversifies its economy and remains resilient through regional instability, both the UAE and the US are entering a strategic phase that will shape the global economy immensely.

This past spring, the Los Angeles World Affairs Council hosted several events highlighting how recent geopolitical tensions, expansion of global alliances, the proliferation of technology, and the promotion of soft power define subsequent diplomatic relations in the international system. In an era of multilateralism and globalization, it is important to continue strengthening these diplomatic ties between states to promote cooperation and collective security, as well as economic and social prosperity that creates mutual gain for states globally.

As always, we would like to extend a thank you to all of our speakers, moderators, LAWAC members, and high school students who have dedicated their time, passion, and curiosity to our events. We look forward to your continued engagement at future events.
