Welcoming Jackson with open arms!

I don't know if anybody remembers the story of the Havasupai horses. Where this Supai horse owner was charged with animal cruelty. These horses were used as a part of the Grand Canyon tourist excursions to the towering waterfalls, using them as pack animals. All the animals were undernourished with open sores and sores. Some of the animals were dropping and dying on the trail, some falling off the canyon wall. I can't write anymore about their conditions without getting sick. If you are interested in reading more about these animals, here is the link https://havasupaihorses.org/testimony Hope you are up for it...

Now for Jackson's story!

Jackson was one of those horses. The lady who adopted him 8 yrs ago, did an awesome job in caring for him. Unfortunately, she had an accident and could no longer care for him. She called other rescues first to see if they would take him, but nobody wanted him because he is blind. The way I see it, you snooze, you lose!

He lost one eye due to infection and the other has maybe 10% vision. I don't know about the other horses, but scar tissue in one eye suggests he was poked several times with a sharp object (most likely a needle) to blur his vision going up and down the canyon wall, while tied to the horse in front of him. He has scar tissue all over him, a few small masses, due to the heavy loads, putting on the straps too tight where they cut under the skin for long periods of time. And only God knows what else he had to endure, but all and all he is doing fairly well!

I don't know how he managed to keep his good nature... Jackson has only been with us for a month now... The fact that he still loves and trusts is beyond me, and so far he seems to be enjoying his time here! And Pathos has become the new Mother Hen... Who knew!!!

Right now I want more for him and I need your help! Most of you who know me, know I don't ask often. I need to raise about $700.00 to rent out a tractor for a day. There are a lot of washouts in the paddocks, which I can't do by hand. I haven't used them since I fenced in the property and started letting the horses run the property. And I can't do that with Jackson... I just need to be able to fix it, so he has a place to go out and run around and just be a horse!!!!

THANK YOU!!

Part 2... Pathos

After that both Pathos and I were in shock! Then, Pathos didn't want to eat, would not go out, he would just stand over where Monkey had passed.... All I could think of, is I'm going to lose him too! After a week or so he started nibbling at his food, but that was about it, though he was drinking!

Now we're into two weeks of the same and he's starting to show a little weight loss. From the first day I got Pathos, he was always a fighter and had a will to live. He watched all of his girls pass over the years, and losing Monkey put him over the edge. But, never have I seen him want to give up!

So, we had a little talk (I do that a lot with the animals, they always seem to know what I'm saying). That if he was going to give up, then now's the time to do it, or I can find him a new friend. That was the first time I saw his ears perk up!

Now here is the good side of Karma! Later that afternoon I got a call from a lady in flagstaff who had an accident and could no longer care for her horse. REALLY! She told me that she tried other rescues in her area, but no one wanted him because he was blind... She told me his story ( Will be posted in part 3) and couldn't say YES fast enough!

I couldn't wait to tell Pathos! He actually started eating! Now, it was the big countdown. After the second week of waiting, I'm pretty sure he thought I was full of crap! It was a few days later when I told him that TODAY'S THE DAY AND JACKSON IS ON HIS WAY!!!

Do you know he stood at the end of his run, ears straight up, standing erect and staring at the gate for 4 hours until Jackson got here! This is where I know Karma did the right thing!

Wait until you meet Jackson, he really is one special boy!!!

I'm still trying to cope with the loss of Monkey, to see a happy, healthy horse die within a 24hr. period...

Monkey has always had a zest for life and an amazing love for his BFF Pathos. The two really enjoyed each other's company! When they were in their stalls at night, I could sit on my porch and hear them talking to each other, everyday they would go on one of adventures together. In July we were in the middle of a horrible heatwave, so I would let them out early in the morning after their breakfast and they would come back in when it got hot. Everything was normal!

They went back to their stalls about 10:30 a.m. and by 11:30 Monkey down. Got him up, I gave him a dose of Banamine and from that point he stayed up. He just did not want to eat his dinner! The next morning he's still not eating. He started frantically putting his head in his water barrel and throwing water everywhere. By that time, that's when I noticed he couldn't swallow! His gums were a normal color, the tongue wasn't swollen, no drooling, but you can now see he is getting severely dehydrated. Now, I went inside to grab the phone to call for help and went back to the barn.... Monkey was gone. Never had a chance to say goodbye...

After that both Pathos and I were in shock! Then, Pathos didn't want to eat, would not go out, he would just stand over where Monkey had passed.... All I could think of, is I'm going to lose him too! After a week or so he started nibbling at his food, but that was about it. He was drinking!

The outcome of Pathos will be in my next post!

STELLA!!!

This poor girl is only six and already has had a lifetime of abuse. Her first three years were with a man who had severe dementia. He kept her locked up in a closet for unknown amounts of time! Her jaw was also broken (how is unknown). She was finally sent to a rescue who provided her with vet care and a foster home.

Unfortunately I was told her foster home was always complaining about Stella saying she was uncontrollable, her hair was falling out, her feet were deformed, her tongue was too long ,her breath was bad, and demanded a dental check-up because she did not like the smell of her breath. So for the most part, Stella spent a lot of time being in a kennel.

Turns out, some of the vets were misdiagnosing her. One put her on a thyroid medication that she never needed (.07), which threw her thyroid value off the charts! A different vet put Stella on Prozac as well. This poor dog was bouncing off the walls! Which also caused her tongue to hang out all the time, as if she just ran the 100 yard dash!

The vet decided it was okay to proceed with the dental procedure even though she really didn't need one. Did it anyway. They almost lost her and it took them a while to wake her up! As a result, the vet advised the rescue that if she needed anymore operations to be careful as there might be something wrong with her heart.

I reviewed all of the blood tests from the start and I can honestly say, HORSE POOPIE!

This poor dog's life was spiraling out of control... First, her feet were not deformed. It was caused from being kenneled all the time and pawing the bars to get out. Her pads were so swollen that her toes were curling down, giving the illusion her feet were too short. Stella's tongue was always hanging down low because of all the medication she did not need, as well as being locked up. But when I heard the fact that the vet was willing to shorten her tongue, my knees just buckled...

I've only had her for about 6 mos. and rest assured Stella now has a life! She loves her new family (including the cats), freedom and just being a part of. What more can you ask for, for this beautiful soul!

Tucker!

Tucker came to me about a year ago. He was found in Mexicali. Where he was hit by a car and left to die.

Tucker managed to move himself off the road until someone found him and called a rescue. His tailbone was crushed, and back broken right above his hips. From the trauma, caused him to be unable to retain his memory for more than a few minutes and his eyes would start to float. His re**um is completely open, there is no muscle control. Another way of saying it, Tucker has no pucker! (sorry had to say it!)

Some how, Tucker can still walk and run, he just can't sit. He is starting to retain his memory and new information and loves being a part of his new family!

Macy hasn't lost her touch in attracting the boys! These three (Macy, Flynn and Ollie) have been together a little over 8 years now, and their love for each other has never swayed!
