🐾 National Deaf Dog Awareness Week! 🐾
Here at Ask Dr. Caryn and Beach Paws Boutique, we want to celebrate these amazing pups and share some simple tips for living with, caring for, and interacting with a deaf dog. Deaf dogs are just as loving, trainable, and capable as hearing dogs—they just need a little extra understanding! Here’s how we can make our world a better place for them:
For Deaf Dog Owners & Caregivers:
🐾 Communication is Key: Use clear hand signals for commands like 'sit,' 'stay,' and 'come.' Consistency is essential!
🐾 Safety First: A visual signal, like a gentle touch or wave, can get their attention before you approach. Never wake a sleeping deaf dog from behind.
🐾 Enrichment Matters: Focus on scent-work, puzzles, and environmental enrichment to keep them mentally stimulated and happy.
🐾 Training & Socialization: Just like any dog, deaf dogs benefit enormously from positive reinforcement training and careful, positive socialization.
For the Public:
🐾 Always Ask First: Always ask the owner for permission before approaching any dog, but especially a deaf dog. They need to know you are there.
🐾 Approach with Care: Walk towards them from where they can see you, and make sure they are aware of you before trying to pet them.
🐾 Respect Their Space: Do not startle them! A sudden touch can be scary for a dog who cannot hear you coming.
🐾 Spread Understanding: Educate others that deaf dogs are not "broken" or "untrainable"—they are wonderful, intelligent companions.
Deaf dogs don’t know they are different—they just know they are loved! Let's all do our part to make sure they feel safe, understood, and happy.
