Cassie (not her real name) called seeking assistance with diapers. After speaking with her about how we could help her, she asked about also getting help for her sister who had a newborn and was currently living in a shelter. I let her know we would be able to help them both.
When Cassie showed up, she was surprised that we didn’t require her to “prove” her need. She was embarrassed to have to ask for help as she was usually the one who helped everyone else but she was forced to leave her job.
She is pregnant now with her 3rd child and her employer refused to make the accommodations’ the doctor said were necessary to keep her baby safe. She said her choice was to either keep her job or protect her baby, so she chose her baby even as others warned her that she had her other 2 kids to worry about. Even with those real issues hanging over her head, she wasn’t going to risk her baby’s life.
We were able to provide her with diapers, wipes, newborn gift pack and a few other items to help relieve some of the burden. As she was leaving and thanking me, again, she turned and said God Bless you and everyone here for helping.
