Caregiver Workshop- The Communication Skills No One Teaches Caregivers

When you became a care partner, you probably learned how to communicate with your person – But no one taught you how to communicate your needs.

This session goes beyond the basics. Yes, they will cover essential communication strategies for aphasia and dementia care, but they will be also addressing what really breaks down when you’re caregiving: how to say no, how to protect your identity in conversations with family and friends, and why grief makes it nearly impossible to advocate for yourself.

Genevieve Richardson, a speech pathologist specializing in aphasia and founder of LIFE Speech Pathology, will share a different approach to communication – one that acknowledges the emotional weight of caregiving while giving you practical, immediately usable strategies. You’ll learn how boundaries are a communication skill, why your words matter as much as theirs, and how to stop losing yourself in the role.

Whether you’re caring for someone with stroke, aphasia, dementia, or any condition that’s changed your life, these principles will help you communicate more effectively in every direction – with your person, with your family, and most importantly, with yourself.

Celebrated every May, Older Americans Month (OAM) is led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL). Established in 1963, OAM is a time to recognize older Americans' contributions, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm commitments to serving older adults in our communities.

This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” focuses on prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as cornerstones of healthy aging. It encourages older adults to take an active role in their health — advocating for themselves, accessing preventive care, and making informed decisions that support independence.

How can individuals take charge of their health at every age?
Stay up to date on preventive care and screenings. Build and maintain social connections that support emotional well-being. Choose nutritious, minimally processed foods. Incorporate regular physical activity to maintain strength and mobility. Practice daily habits that support mental health and resilience.

Older Americans Month is more than a celebration - it’s a call to action. Together, we can build communities where every older adult has the opportunity to thrive, remain independent, and shape the future for generations to come. Join us in strengthening our community—reach out to engAGE Travis County to learn how you can get involved in meaningful volunteer opportunities that support older adults in living vibrant, independent, and connected lives.
