‼️ Important info ‼️ Screwworm has been confirmed in a dog in New Mexico. Please share!

The USDA says a dog has been confirmed to be infected with screwworm in Lea County, New Mexico. The case has been classified as the first confirmed detection in our state.

In addition to detection in cattle, officials have also confirmed a New World Screwworm infection in a goat in Gillespie County, Texas.

The flesh-eating parasite, which can cause devastating injuries to livestock, pets, wildlife, and in rare cases humans, is now confirmed in multiple states.

➡️ Educate yourselves on the situation with reputable sources.
➡️ Consult with your Veterinarian if you have any concerns.
➡️ Keep your dog away from livestock.
➡️ Keep your dogs' area clean & free from flies.
➡️ Pay extra close attention to any open wounds on your dog & tend to them immediately. Especially near body openings (nose, eyes, ge****ls, etc) & wounds that are painful & get worse rapidly.
➡️ Unlike typical fly larvae (maggots) that feed off of dead or necrotic tissue (old wounds), screwworm fly larvae (screwworms) feed on healthy tissue, which creates the wound.

Officials are urging pet owners and ranchers to inspect animals daily for wounds, maggots, or signs of infestation and report suspected cases immediately. ScrewwormNM.org

Happy 11th Birthday to NMDOG little Mini Woof, SPARROW 🥳🎁🎉🎂

In 2017, I received a call from our partners at Bernalillo County Animal Care and Resource Center about a contained stray, they asked if I could pick this kiddo up - because they were very short staffed - & bring her to the shelter. Of course! When I arrived at the callers residence, I saw this little bitty Husky chained up looking completely defeated. The caller claimed to have found her running loose "2-3mos prior", stated they decided to keep her because she appeared pregnant. They told me they "sold the last of her pups & wanted her gone" 😭 I took the chain from around SPARROWS neck, lifted her trembling, matted little body into the van & left.

On the way to the shelter I decided to call & ask if I could just do her required stray hold (remember, the caller claimed they found her running loose) at NMDOG HQ. 7 days passed & no one claimed her so she remained with me at HQ. The first day I allowed her off leash in the main yard, she promptly jumped onto the top of the 6ft cinderblock wall & walked the perimeter of the yard. Thats when she got her name - she flew up there like a little bird. Thank goodness, even in her nervous state, SPARROW jumped back *into* the yard instead of flying over to the outer side. We had the wall raised another 2' the very next day.

SPARROW has been a delightful member of the NMDOG HQ Home Sanctuary Pack ever since. It took her 13 months & 7 days to finally decide to sleep with me & the rest of the pack in the bedroom. Ill never forget the moment I woke up in the middle of the night to feel her laying over my feet at the bottom of the bed. I laid as still as I could as not to scare or disturb her. She has slept in the bed with me every night since.

SPARROW is still a silly little weirdo who doesnt completely trust anyone "just because" they are visiting HQ & she will let you know "intruder woo woo wooooo". But shes my little weirdo & she is as sweet as they come. SPARROW enjoys digging giant holes, birdwatching & hunting for lizards. She adores her brothers Bark Ranger Roadie & NMDOG ROAN...& they adore her. Its been a pleasure caring for SPARROW & keeping her safe for the past 9 years, allowing her to be the sweet, silly, weirdo little goof that she is. Never change SPARROW, we LoVe you just the way you are. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ❤

Approximately 6 weeks ago, we took in an emergency chaining case from Friends of the Tucumcari Animal Shelter & we named him JACE ❤🐾 We initially committed to helping through his initial decompression off of the chain (appx 2wks) then we realized he needed more & he needed the best, so he stayed.

JACE is now 11 mos old & in his short life he experienced more suffering & pain than ANY dog should know in a lifetime 🥲 The scars on JACES neck told a story of multiple embedded chains, he was covered in ticks & emaciated. He was scared, he was confused & he was untrusting of humans. When we took him in for his initial vetting, we discovered JACE was also suffering from heartworm disease.

Fast forward to now. JACE has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped & groomed. He has gained 17 # & has received treatment for heartworm disease with Dr Hamel at Blue Cross Animal Clinic. JACE is currently undergoing 30 days of strict activity restriction (after HWT injection #2) & has made treasured human friends. Currently, JACE is staying with our friends at Duke City Dog Spa & Lounge, while he works hands on with Mz. Pawsitive LLC 3x/wk - focusing on enrichment, calming exercises & basic manners (jumping/mouthing). It is so important that his body stay still so he can heal, but that his mind continues to learn. We are so grateful for these trusted partnerships - JACE is loved & adored ❤ & he has come a long way from the fearful & defensive boy we met straight off of the chain.

Once his HWT restriction is lifted, we will begin leash work & dog/dog socialization so he has the skills he needs to find the very best home. Rehabilitating a dog off of a chain - physically, mentally & emotionally - requires many moving parts, lots of funds, a strong commitment & time. We are committed to JACE through placement & will provide progress reports as we move forward.

Special thanks to Verdes Cannabis for their $2500 donation which covered the cost of his heartworm treatment 🙏We are also very grateful to our friends at Dr.Hempdog for their donation of CBD Behavior Formula tincture & calming bars to help him through this "down time". JACES journey is not cheap = lodging costs, trainer expense, food, supplements, gear, supplies, enrichment items, treats, medical care...they all add up, fast! To date, JACES expenses total over $6K & we are nowhere near done. But he is worth every cent & we are so honored to be helping him.

Please consider a donation to help us keep our promise to this very special boy 🥰 Once hes ready & is cleared for adoption...hes going to make a verrrry lucky human the adventurous & loyal companion they have dreamed of. And of course, they will have a lifetime of support from NMDOG.
