LIVE SEARCH

Our Trailing Dogs are trained to search for the specific human scent and to determine the direction of travel for the lost person. Our Scent Discriminating Air Scent Dogs are trained to search for the specific human scent in a given area. For the search manager, this means that ground and canine searchers can work alongside each other. One dog team can search an area that would take at least 20 human searchers. LAND RECOVERY

Our human remains detection dogs are trained to locate the scent of human decomposition from blood to bones. The dogs can locate remains hidden on the ground, buried, or hanging above ground. WATER RECOVERY

Our water recovery dogs can work on rivers and lakes, from shore and from a boat. Dogs work with divers by locating scent cones that reduce the size of the area to be searched.

🐕 THE NOSE KNOWS

🔎 SCENT DETECTION — PART 1
From Hunting to Detection: How the Detection Dog Developed

For thousands of years, humans have relied on the dog’s nose.

Originally, the question was simple:

“Where did it go?”

Find the animal. Follow the trail. Locate the game.

But eventually we began asking dogs a very different question:

“Can you find this particular smell?”

That change opened the door to modern scent detection.

Explosives. Drugs. Currency. Human remains. Wildlife. Pests. Conservation targets. Firearms-related odours — and many more.

But here’s the important bit:

The dog doesn’t understand what it’s looking for in the way we do.

An explosive detection dog doesn’t understand explosives or public safety.

A cash dog doesn’t understand money.

A conservation dog doesn’t understand ecology.

A human remains detection dog doesn’t understand what recovering someone may mean to a family.

Humans understand the purpose.
The dog understands the scent problem.

Through training, we take an odour that initially means very little to the dog and give it value.

Target odour predicts reward.

So the dog learns:

Search → Locate → Communicate → Reward.

And that is where detection becomes fascinating.

We’re taking behaviours dogs already possess — hunting, searching, investigating and locating — and directing them towards a specific odour of our choosing.

But finding the odour is only part of the job.

The dog must learn to ignore thousands of irrelevant smells, work the available scent, locate its source and clearly communicate the find.

And the environment constantly changes the problem.

Airflow. Temperature. Buildings. Vehicles. Packaging. Height. Surfaces. Barriers. Contamination. Residual odour.

That’s why a good detection handler eventually stops thinking only:

“Where is the hide?”

and starts thinking:

“Where is the odour?”

Because they aren’t necessarily the same place.

Modern detection dogs may look effortless when they work.

Search. Change of behaviour. Source. Indication. Reward.

But behind those few seconds can be hundreds or thousands of carefully constructed repetitions.

We’ve taken one of the dog’s oldest biological abilities and developed it into one of the most versatile working partnerships in the world.

But that raises the next question:

What is the dog actually smelling?

That’s where we’re going next.

🔜 SCENT DETECTION — PART 2
What Is the Dog Actually Smelling?

We’ll look at odour molecules, VOCs, scent plumes, source versus available odour, contamination, residual odour, generalisation and discrimination.

Because the dog isn’t searching for what we can see.

It’s searching for what it can smell.

Good morning KSF Fans, KSF Naturalist Jess Blalock here! Nope, you're not hallucinating, there are grapes growing in Kanawha State Forest, and yes - they're NATIVE! Meet the Frost Grape, currently in fruit in different locations throughout the forest! Is it edible? Yes, this tart, acidic fruit can be used in jams, jellies, and even wines! As the leaves die back and it becomes dormant, the fruits will dry out and become raisins on the vine. This actually makes them sweeter, and they're a favorite food for a variety of animals and birds! The vines rely on support to thrive, and can be found growing over a variety of trees.
To ensure that you have a grape and not a toxic lookalike - or "moonseed" - you have to open one of the fruits. Frost grapes will have round seeds with very little pulp; Moonseeds have a distinctive single, crescent-shaped seed. Know before you forage! 👍
