Start School Later Start School Later™ is a registered 501(c)(3) organization committed to healthy and safe school start times. This is not a trivial matter. This needs to stop.

We're fighting for something we consider basic human rights--sleep, health, safety, and a chance for an appropriate education. Starting school in the 7 o'clock hour, a practice that began a few decades ago primarily to save money on bus runs, makes these things impossible for many adolescents and young adults in this country, who jeopardize their health, safety, and education at risk simply by going to school. Many people seem to forget that teenagers are still growing children (or even that they're human beings). School is not a job, and it is not a choice. Forcing teens to go to school at times that are incompatible with what we now know are shifted biological clocks, and a need for about 9 hours of sleep per night, is negligent, if not criminal. And we feel that the only way to stop it is a kind of child protection law similar to those set for child labor. A government limit on how early schools can open would make it easier for local school systems to do the right thing when they set schedules, instead of bowing to political pressures that currently keep most of them from changing school hours. We began back in 2011 with an online petition that is still in circulation. On March 7, 2012 we began delivering it to Washington DC in a series of "Wake Up Wednesdays" We are continuing these deliveries and setting up meetings with national, state, and local decision makers to raise awareness about the need for safe, healthy, humane school start times for all students, culminating in the passage of California's landmark "Start School Later" bill. But we're not done yet! We still have lots of work to do raising awareness, serving as a clearinghouse for information, and helping local communities move to safe, healthy school hours for all. As a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, we have three chief activities, all essential to our mission: education, research, and advocacy. For more information on our activities on all of these fronts, please see our website: www.StartSchoolLater.net.

Matthew Wolf-Meyer, an anthropologist and professor of Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has argued that most resistance to changing school start times is based on “mythical thinking” that the traditional way of doing something is the best way.

Wolf-Meyer said that in the scientific community, there is a consensus that delaying school start times improves student health and performance. “It’s really just school boards and communities that are the problem,” he said. Start School Later New York

“I think it gets lost that schools already start incredibly early, and kids are already going to school in the dark … It’s a huge problem,” said Terra Ziporyn Snider, executive director and co-founder of Start School Later. “If we went to permanent daylight saving time, then even more students would be going to school in the dark unless the schools change their start times.”

School start times have taken center stage in the fight surrounding permanent daylight saving time.  Senators concerned about kids walking to school in the dark are holding the line against le…

A district committee is recommending a new schedule that would move high school start times to 9 a.m., 75 minutes later than the current start time. Under the proposal, junior high would start at 8:45 a.m. instead of 7:50 a.m., nearly an hour later. Elementary school start times would move from 8:45 a.m. to 8 a.m.

“Once we know better, we do better”. - Dr Tatia Prieto “It’s worth the fight”.

Interestingly, though Greenwich Public Schools cited budget costs for reversing to earlier school start times, their number of routes and transportation expense INCREASED in 2025-26 after undoing the change

Dr Tatia Prieto shares lessons learned with school start time implementation. “This change is not for the squeamish and you need to count backbones”. Ironically, Dr Prieto states, “Transportation is not the obstacle. It never is”.
