Take a deep breath in, and a looooong exhale out. You’ve almost made it to the weekend! Which also means… it’s “Fun Fact Friday!”
Today’s Fun Fact is brought to you by “Twiggy,” our Ambassador for Midland painted turtles. Here you can see her puffing her throat in a very interesting way! She might look like she is breathing, but she is actually doing something called “Buccal oscillation.”
Buccal oscillation is the movement of air or water in and out of the buccal cavity without it passing to the lungs. Twiggy makes these movements to “smell” the water around her! She pulsates her lower jaw to pump water through her nares (nostrils) into the buccal cavity, where it is processed by her olfactory (smelling) system!
In simplest terms, whenever you see a painted turtle making frog-like throat puffs, imagine they are getting a good whiff of the world around them – and you can see them doing this remarkable ability both in and out of the water!
You can come see Twiggy fascinatingly-oscillating this Sunday, 06/14, at Discovery World’s 2nd Annual “Turtle Fest!” See the link below for more information:
