Community Highlight: Meet Vince

Vince is full of positivity and brings light to our community. After surviving a stroke, he found the American Stroke Foundation and became part of the Next Step program. His favorite parts of the program are the morning exercises, NuStep, and spending time with the community where he enjoys talking and interacting with others. One of his favorite activities is playing UNO with other members during lunch.

Outside of ASF, Vince continues to work on his stroke recovery by using the NuStep at home, and he keeps showing up every day to work toward his goals. Through his recovery journey, he has learned not to take anything for granted, realizing that even small things matter after the many changes that followed his stroke. The advice he wants to share with others is “don’t be afraid to try new stuff.”

Supporting your well‑being begins with moments of intentional pause. Start small, create a quiet space, and allow yourself time to settle in. Focus on your breath, release expectations, and let thoughts come and go without judgment.

Practice consistently, even for just a few minutes each day. Notice the calm, clarity, and balance that develop over time—and honor every moment you show up for yourself.

Community Highlight: Meet Joe

Joe is a valued Next Step member who continues to thrive through meaningful social engagement and active participation in our community. Some of his favorite parts of the program include riding the NuStep bike, playing games that challenge his thinking, and practicing movements that he can continue at home.

Outside of ASF, Joe enjoys listening to music, reading, and most of all spending time with his grandchildren, supported by his loving wife and their six children. After surviving a stroke, Joe now views the world differently and is focused on strengthening his voice to improve communication and valuing the social connection found in activities like board games and dominoes. His advice to others: "Everyone has something to teach you - regardless of first impressions, people are often more than they seem."

Health is the foundation of our families, our work, and our communities. It happens through access, support, and connection.

Through our Next Step programs, we help turn recovery into lifelong wellness by empowering people with movement, confidence, and community.

Today is a reminder to take action for your own well‑being and for the health of others. Move your body, care for your mental health, take steps to protect your long‑term health, and support care and recovery in your community.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to live healthier, stronger lives. Together, we can help make that possible.

Prioritize essential activities during your peak energy periods, maintain good nutrition and sleep habits, and ask for help when needed. It’s National Hobby Month, and we’re celebrating the small (and big!) activities that bring joy, purpose, and connection into our lives.

Hobbies aren’t just fun — they’re powerful tools for wellness. From improving mental health and reducing stress to supporting physical recovery and building community, meaningful activities play an important role in life after surviving a stroke.

Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing how hobbies support healing, highlight the voices and talents of our members, and explore how staying engaged can strengthen both body and mind.

Stay tuned and tell us what hobbies bring you joy?
