Our crew was out at Sun Prairie repairing and installing cattle guards when they spotted a Plains Spadefoot Toad resting in sandy, gravelly soil. These toads get their name from the spade-like wedge on their hind feet, which they use to burrow into the ground. Special thanks to our Senior Program Manager Lars Anderson for snapping a few shots of this handsome fella before getting back to it. 😉

Volume on for this one! 🔊 Hearing the bugle of a bull elk is high on the bucket list for countless prairie visitors. Fall marks the beginning of elk rut on the Northern Great Plains when bull elk break off from their bachelor groups as testosterone rises, bugling loudly to establish dominance and gather cows. During this time, bulls are highly aggressive toward other elk and toward people. So make sure and keep your distance if you come across one!

Last August, Janet Pesaturo placed four cameras on the PN Unit near the confluence of the Judith River and the Missouri River outside Winifred, Montana, in areas she felt would have the most activity. 📸

The footage captured over the following weeks is a good reminder of how much is happening out there above and below ground. How many species can you spot?

And that’s a wrap on our 2026 Ferret Fest! We had a blast watching these kids explore everything the National Discovery Center has to offer and, of course, interact with Bandit, our black-footed ferret!

Our National Discovery Center in Lewistown, MT, is home to one of only about 600 black-footed ferrets alive today. Bandit is one of just a few dozen on loan as education ambassadors to conservation organizations across the U.S. and Canada.

Stories from the Prairie | American Prairie Journal Vol. 02

Maria Hawkins, a direct descendant of Chief Little Bear, grew up away from the reservation and away from her people. Every visit to the homelands carries deep meaning, a chance for her family to experience the traditions keeping their spirit alive, and for her daughter to feel pride in the land where their people once roamed freely.

Her piece traces the history of the Cree from Canada in 1885, through decades of displacement, to the powwow grounds of Rocky Boy today. The truth of reservation life is complex, she writes, but it is real, and rooted in resilience.
