💙 Why Edmond Family Counseling’s Partnership with the Oklahoma Association of Youth Services Matters

Strong communities are built through strong partnerships.

Edmond Family Counseling is proud to partner with the Oklahoma Association of Youth Services (OAYS), a statewide network dedicated to supporting children, teens, and families through prevention, education, counseling, and advocacy.

By collaborating with OAYS, our team stays connected to best practices, professional training, and statewide initiatives that help us better serve the families who walk through our doors every day. This partnership strengthens our ability to provide high-quality mental health services, respond to emerging community needs, and advocate for the well-being of Oklahoma’s youth.

When organizations work together, families benefit.

Together, we’re building a healthier future—one child, one family, and one community at a time. 💚

🏆 Congratulations to Sheila Stinnett
We are proud to celebrate Sheila Stinnett, Executive Director of Edmond Family Counseling, on being named Executive Director of the Year by the Association of Youth Services

This prestigious Office Choice Award recognizes an executive director whose impact reaches far beyond their own organization to strengthen the entire field of youth services across Oklahoma.

As Peter Messiah, Ed.D., CEO of OAYS, shared:
“The Executive Director of the Year Award is extended to a member-agency executive director whose work goes beyond their own agency. That is the real litmus test. Someone can run a great organization and not win this award. It has to reach the field.”
He continued:
“Prevention, early intervention, counseling, education, and community partnership—Sheila has done it all, and she’s done it well. She’s shaped much of the conversation in Oklahoma around counseling and student mental health. Educators know her. Professionals across the state know her. That kind of reach is unusual.”
Peter also reflected on Sheila’s leadership within OAYS:
“The continuing education programming we now offer licensed professionals across the state—that was her. The office helped, I helped, but her leadership is why it got done. It’s a statewide resource now.”

We couldn’t agree more. Sheila’s unwavering commitment to children, families, mental health professionals, and communities across Oklahoma has made a lasting impact and strengthened the entire profession.

Please join us in congratulating Sheila on this well-deserved honor! 💙👏

Children don’t just learn screen rules—they learn screen habits by watching how adults use devices every day.

When parents are constantly on phones or multitasking with screens, kids often:
• Push for more screen time
• Struggle with boundaries
• Miss opportunities for connection

The good news: small changes in adult habits can create big changes in family culture.

💙 Mental Health Tip: Start with one simple shift—choose one daily screen-free family moment (meals, bedtime, or outdoor time).

How kids use social media matters. Passive scrolling can increase comparison, anxiety, and emotional stress.

💙 Mental Health Tip: Encourage intentional, purposeful screen use. Limiting social media use when you see your child struggling is a great boundary for their mental health.

Boredom builds creativity, independence, and emotional resilience

Unstructured time helps kids build emotional and creative skills that screens often interrupt.

💙 Mental Health Tip: Let boredom last a little longer before stepping in.

Sleep disruption is one of the biggest ways screen time affects mental health

Screens before bed can interfere with sleep quality, which directly impacts mood, anxiety, and focus.

💙 Mental Health Tip: Try a 60-minute screen-free wind-down routine.

Research shows that teens who spend more than 4 hours per day on screens are significantly more likely to experience symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Balance matters.

💙 Mental Health Tip: Start by observing patterns without judgment.

👉 “What changes do you notice in your child’s mood, sleep, or behavior after a heavy screen day?”
