😎Fun fact: Paulie takes his meds one way and one way only.

1. Meatballs - the right brand, please, or it will be spit out.
2. Not cold. If they've been refrigerated, you're gonna need to let them sit out and warm up. Too chilly and they'll end up on the floor.
3. They need to be more of meat cookies. Not too round, not too thick. They must be in the shape of a sandwich cookie, thick enough to cover the meds, but not so thick that they feel like a meatball. Incorrectly formed and they'll be dramatically spewed to the floor.

He says it's not unreasonable and we need to adjust.

O'pile of fun: properly rearranged and squished blankie, bed halfway on top of blankie, Butternut on top of blankie with head on bed, and Hattie on bed with head on Butternut. It's a puppy slumber party! 🎉

Not uncommon to find Butternut and Hattie like this. These two are bestest gal pals. Snuggling, playing, flirting with the boys...they back each other up, hang out and chat girl stuff, and just love each other to pieces.

This is one of my favorite things about rescue...when you witness them find their best friend; a connection. When things are scary, uncertain, or adjustments have to be made, they support one another, provide comfort, and turn it into fun. They make plans to tackle Maxwell, share their bones, tell the other to put her big girl pants on if she's in a tizzy, and roll around in the grass or in the house, flailing paws, chewing necks, and back dancing. Sometimes they just cuddle. The dynamics are beautiful, especially for dogs that were once unwanted and disregarded.

These two always cause a smile. Love is an amazing thing, isn't it?

There are beds all over the office, but sometimes in the midst of play or "making" their beds, they get tossed around, out of whack, lopsided, etc. And when the senior, blind girl (aka: Miss Matilda, queen of the court) can't get comfy as a result, Hattie is there for her, making sure she has a soft landing.

Hattie's soul is one of the purest, happiest, and brightest. If you're looking for a dog who is thoughtful, loving, crazy fun, and devoted beyond words, she's the one for you. VET DAY!! Today Sir Sterling had a recheck with doc. His lungs sound great, so we got rid of his URI. Yay! So now we focus on him orthopedically and upping pain management for those old aches and pains. Knocking things out step by step for the old man. 🥊

Otherwise he enjoyed the cooler day out and playing sidekick to foster mom. He’s a pretty cool sidekick, I have to admit. 🫶

VetDay: As previously mentioned, Janie spent some time with the surgeon again to review her current situation. Unfortunately there wasn't a lot of difference in what was previously discussed. I think I got my hopes up, as ridiculous as this sounds, hoping that since she had the added tibia issue it might open the door to fix both the tibia & patellas, solidifying her legs & giving her a new chance. I suppose I romanticized it a bit, but it was hard not to.

Ultimately, it goes back to the surgery & whether or not it would be successful - there's 15-20% chance it won't take, which is significant in medicine. It'd include both rotating the tibia & putting her knees back in place, doing one at leg a time.

Recovery would be tough, at 8-10wks for each leg...so potentially 20wks of doing nothing & being confined for Janie, IF nothing goes wrong to extend the time frame, while watching her friends live normal lives.

Dr Dickson is willing to do the surgery if we want her to but did offer meeting w/a surgeon who's done more of them & does them regularly. We're taking this into consideration b/c the fact that she's only 3.5yrs old keeps coming to mind. Her knees are as bad as they get (grade 4), & her muscles will continue to tighten up, making her hunch more over time, adding to the difficulty of walking. While she currently has no arthritis, she will eventually.

We want what's best for Janie. Success would be incredible & bring such joy to all of us. Putting her through a great deal for it not to work is unfathomable, especially at a minimum of $14,068. We're not deciding either way at the moment, & may very well talk to a surgeon who does them more. Whatever the case, please keep our sweetheart in your thoughts & prayers, as well as us so that we make the best choices for Janie.

Has anyone out there ever experienced this surgery before?

One of the best ways to help the dogs is through monthly donations.
