Libby then & now. 🩷

When she came to us in October of 2021, there was a lot of emotional baggage. Beeps, loud noises, even the microwave & my continuous glucose monitor set her off. She'd run, try to go through doors & windows, climb walls, & was absolutely frantic. She was pitiful, all b/c of an electric collar that beeped & shocked her. She was underweight, & as you can tell, not taken care of physically or emotionally.

It was work. The poor girl was a mess, dealing with strong fears, separation anxiety, anemia, pneumonia, additional breathing issues, & a chip on her shoulder with other animals. She was about 3yrs old. She's now 8.

Today, Libby's strong, confident, affectionate, devoted, & kind. She's no longer anxious when someone leaves, she's well mannered in the house, but she also loves a good car adventure. People are her jam...she'll melt into you as if you were the coziest blanket on earth. She's even come a long way with other dogs...although she can still sometimes be particular or grouchy. Yet she's with several in her foster home & has held no grudges. Libby appreciates a good friend...just not a sassy one.

Libby is gentle, patient, & longs for love. She'll swipe you with her Pyr paw (as they do) & look into your eyes as if you're the only person on earth she could ever adore. She lays her head in your lap or on your chest, radiating love. You can feel it in your bones.

Yet she's still here because of all she had to go through & all she had to learn. She's here because she takes a supplement to help her breathing. Now she's a senior, so she has another knock against her. This beautiful, warmhearted soul that has been overlooked, despite being such a blessing to those she knows and loves, has been in rescue 5 years. She doesn't just need a home or a family, she needs her lifemate; that person or family that doesn't care about her past, her fear of storms, her supplements, her particulars with other dogs, or her short tail.

Libby needs...her lifemate.

The time I've spent on emails/calls for animals about to die, go to shelter, or who've been dumped = exasperating.

Mind you, it's always "It keeps getting worse," or "My inbox has hundreds & hundreds in need," etc. But we're at a point of making 0⃣ progress & sick w/worry, regret, & anger b/c we can't help - not just k9.5, but animal welfare as a whole.

I know you've seen it lately - rescues are drowning ✔, shelters dealing w/high euthanasia ✔, & animals dumped everywhere ✔. There's blame on economy, vet prices, spay/neuter, & let's not forget "moving." Sure, there are devastating situations where people are really crushed & need help. But (excluding shelters) 95% of the time we hear the same whining & excuses w/a different pet inserted.

It boils down to people not wanting the responsibility. I don't mean those who love their pets & genuinely hit hard times (excluding "Gee, I love him so much & hate to give up..."). I mean backyard breeders, people who won't put money out for spay/neuter, won't give prevention, won't take off dogs off chains, won't feed, won't train or work on behaviors b/c it's too time consuming or frustrating & pets should know better, & those who don't view animals as living, breathing, blood flowing beings who experience fear, pain, emotion, & stress.

Disagree with me? Start/join a rescue. Work at a shelter or vet. Read the emails, listen to the phone calls, hear the stories, & walk an animal back & hold it for euthanasia. Otherwise, there's nothing to say b/c you simply don't know until you've been knee deep in it.

The answer? 1st, people need to be responsible. Don't get/"rescue" a pet if not 100% committed for the LIFE of a pet. Volunteer in animal welfare before getting one. 2nd, do responsible things - learn about daily care, medical care, & training. And for God's sake, STOP BLAMING US AND VETERINARIANS for not "helping."

Hitting me the hardest this week: a blind/deaf, emaciated, senior pittie. 2 barely weaned Pyr pups dumped at a worksite, a sickly senior couple who need help w/2 giant breed dogs, & a senior dog tied up, rarely fed, & wanted gone upon return of owner's trip. Want to hear more?

Paulie agrees.

Vet Day!! We took Sterling in last week to get bloodwork and do a GI panel in the hope of finding out the cause of his vomiting. Doc called today to let us know he has low B12 and IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). Poor guy keeps getting hit.

He's been doing well on a mushroom tincture called Digest by . We've used a lot of their products, as we've mentioned before, so we gave it a shot. He's done very well and his vomiting has decreased significantly (as has Paulie's who has dealt with some chronic vomiting). Doc said to keep on doing what we're doing (Digest, probiotics, etc.) and add the B12. We'll make sure his diet is appropriate, and while we hope all goes well, should things take a turn, we'll have to add prednisone.

I guess he got jealous of Magoo all these years and now wants to get all of the attention, for at this point he has and takes meds for:
Alopecia
Advanced cataracts/blindness
Anxiety
Hypothyroidism
and now low B12 and IBD.

So we'll let him stay in the sanctuary, unless his dream family comes along and says "We love that adorable senior warthog with his funny little gait and soft kisses!"

Despite it all, he's a strong boy who's still affectionate, yells at the youngsters, bolts out the door announcing his arrival in the yard, and looves his food. Just keep him in your thoughts and prayers that we can continue on a path that will help him feel better.

How anyone can resist this girl is beyond me. 😍 Adopt Libby before she withers away and suffers from the lack of everything-she-wants-that-you-are-supposed-to-give-her.
