✨ PARTICIPANT SPOTLIGHT ✨

Meet Christopher β€” published children's author. πŸ“šπŸ§‘

Christopher had dreamed of writing children's books for years. This year, he did it. And a few months ago, he walked into GiGi's Playhouse Atlanta and read his own published stories out loud to participants and parents during Kid's Club and TeenTastic.

He didn't just read. He talked about his life, where his stories come from, and what inspired him to chase the dream in the first place. Imagine being a kid in that room, watching someone who looks like you hold up a book with his own name on the cover.

Christopher has Down syndrome. It's one part of his story β€” and if you stop there, you miss the author, the athlete, the performer, the traveler, the guy with a great sense of humor.

That's exactly what this month is about. See the person, not the label. 🧑
In his words: every person has a story, every voice matters, and no dream is too big.

Meet Kyrain.
He says hello with a hug. Every time.

At the beginning of this year, Kyrain got his feeding tube out. He has since discovered his two favorite foods: pizza and bacon.

His Playhouse says he'll achieve anything he sets his mind to, and after a year like that, it's hard to argue.

This is what See the Person, Not the Label means. Kyrain isn't a diagnosis or a list of milestones. He's a kid full of personality who greets everyone with a hug and has very good taste in food.

Thank you to GiGi's Playhouse Lancaster for sharing Kyrain with us.

All month long, we're sharing who our people really are.

πŸŽ‰ HAPPY 15th BIRTHDAY, GiGi's Playhouse Atlanta ! πŸŽ‰

Fifteen years! Fifteen years of open doors, big welcomes, and families finding their people.
Atlanta opened as our 9th Playhouse, and from day one this community has shown up β€” tutoring sessions and dance classes and job skills and birthday parties and a whole lot of hugs, all free, for every age, for life.

Behind every single one of those hours is a volunteer who said yes. A family who kept coming back. A team that believed Atlanta deserved this and then went out and built it.
To our Atlanta families, volunteers, and staff: THANK YOU. Thank you for fifteen years of showing up, believing in what's possible, and creating a place where every single person gets celebrated.

Here's to the next fifteen! πŸ§‘πŸŽ‚

People mean well when they say, β€œthey’re always so happy.”

And often β€” genuinely β€” they are.

They are also competitive. Stubborn about the radio. Nervous on a first day. Bored in a long meeting. Completely unimpressed by your jokes. In love.

Individuals with Down syndrome experience the full range of emotions, the same as anyone.

Happy is one of them.

Getting the whole person is a lot more interesting than getting half of one.

$360 billion has already been given to charity. It just hasn't arrived yet.

That's roughly what sits in Donor-Advised Funds across the country right now β€” money donors have already committed to charitable purposes and already received the tax benefit for. The decision to give has been made. The dollars are simply waiting.

Today is DAF Day, and GiGi's Playhouse is joining thousands of organizations nationwide encouraging donors to put those funds to work for the causes they love.

If you have a DAF, take a moment today to look at what's available in it and think about where those dollars could make a difference.

At GiGi's Playhouse, they fund free, purposeful programming for individuals with Down syndrome and their families β€” from prenatal diagnosis through adulthood. They help us open new Playhouses, expand our virtual reach around the world, and make sure families always have a place where they belong.

The charitable commitment has already been made. Today is a good day to put it to work.

Have a Donor-Advised Fund? Recommend a grant to GiGi's Playhouse today.

"For years, I worried that my son would never find his community."

We live in rural Virginia, and while we always tried to get to national Down syndrome events when we could, there was nothing close to home. My son is in his 30s. He had never had the consistency of friends who truly understood him, or programs that challenged him week after week.

Everything changed when we learned about GiGi's Virtual Playhouse.
Today it's part of our everyday life. If there's a class, he's there. Seven days a week, he logs on eagerly, because it's where he belongs.

His speech has improved beyond anything I imagined. His reading and math have grown tremendously. His confidence has blossomed β€” he smiles more, participates more, and believes in himself in a way I hadn't seen before.

And for the first time in his life, he has real friendships with other adults with Down syndrome. They don't just see each other during class. They call, they text, they stay connected outside of it. He's no longer isolated. He has a community.

As a parent, that's something I prayed for for decades.

Living in a rural community no longer means living without opportunity. The Virtual Playhouse didn't just bring programming into our home. It brought a community, a future, and hope."

GiGi's Virtual Playhouse is free, and it's open to anyone, anywhere.

Storytime, led by the author.

In this video from Tim Harris, Tim reads his book The Book of Hugs to a room full of kids β€” teaching them that a hug can be a simple way to share love, kindness, and connection.

Look at who's at the front of that room. An author. A teacher. Someone a whole group of kids is leaning in to listen to.

That's what we mean by See the Person, Not the Label. Individuals with Down syndrome aren't only on the receiving end of support β€” they're leading, creating, and teaching the rest of us something worth knowing.

GiGi Gianni, author of The GiGi Way and Chief Inspiration Officer of GiGi's Playhouse, brought her book into a real classroom for the first time.

At Fremont Elementary School in Mundelein, IL, GiGi and her longtime literacy tutor, Kim Boundy, taught students Down Syndrome 101: what hypotonia is, why it can affect muscles and speech, and why people with Down syndrome are strong visual learners who just need a little more time. Then GiGi read her own story out loud, and the students did the same exercise that started it all: writing down their own superpowers!

The visit closed with the whole class taking the Generation G pledge: Be generous. Be kind. Be accepting.

It's a fitting way to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month. This October, we're asking the world to see the person, not the label. Read the full story and learn how you can take part: https://ow.ly/pQUt50ZUScf
