The role of a borough mayor generally focuses on public safety, emergency management, and civic leadership, operating as the chief executive of the municipality.
📢 NOTICE: STEELTON BOROUGH SEEKING NEW MAYOR
Due to the resignation of Mayor Ciera Dent on August 17, 2026, the Borough of Steelton is seeking qualified candidates to fill the vacancy.
In accordance with Pennsylvania statute, this vacancy must be filled within 30 days of a vacancy.
The Borough Council will select a candidate and intend to fill the position by August 17th.
Under the Pennsylvania Borough Code, the Mayor of Steelton has these core duties:
Oversight of Police & Public Safety:
♦️Serves as the executive head of the police department (or public safety in general)
♦️Has oversight over public safety, the chief of police and police force
♦️Can declare emergencies in the borough.
Council Role:
♦️Attends committee and council meetings, but only votes to break a tie — the Mayor is not a regular voting member of Council.
♦️Has veto power over ordinances passed by Council, though Council can override with a two-thirds vote
♦️Signs/attests to certain borough documents alongside Council
Law Enforcement & Order:
♦️Enforces borough ordinances and state laws within the borough.
♦️Can call out and direct the police force to preserve order, particularly during emergencies, riots, or public disturbances
Ceremonial/Representative Duties:
♦️Represents the borough at official functions and ceremonies
♦️Signs certain official documents and proclamations
Qualifications to serve as Mayor:
✅ Must be a permanent resident of the Borough of Steelton for at least one year.
✅ Must be a registered voter
