Girls Unplugged is community-led and sponsored by Spoon River College, YWCA of Canton, Canton Park District and MidAmerica National Bank, and it is an after school group for 5th through 8th grade girls.

Today we had our last GIRLS UNPLUGGED meeting for the 2025-2026 school year at Ingersoll Middle School with nearly 45 girls in attendance! ⭐️⭐️ HIGH ENERGY is the only way to describe today’s meeting!! 🥰😊 😀We talked about what we’ve learned this year and all of the awesome topics and amazing speakers we’ve had! We did a “positive plates” activity giving compliments to each other, a “tallest tower challenge” game in small groups, and then CELEBRATED our fantastic year with pizza, snacks and cookies! It was another great meeting with tons of smiles, silly laughter, and spirited conversations!

⭐️⭐️Girls Unplugged is a FREE after school group that meets once a month with 5th-8th grade girls at Ingersoll Middle School. This group is led by 5 local volunteers and proudly sponsored by Spoon River College, Canton YWCA, MidAmerica National Bank and United Way.

Girls Unplugged purchases snacks and drinks for our participants each month, craft and activity supplies, and some months we send the girls home with free personal hygiene products and other items, and every year we purchase T-shirts to give to the girls! At our last meeting of the year we purchase pizza, cookies and drinks for all of the girls and celebrate all of the great skills we’ve learned and discussions we’ve had all year! For the last 8 years this group has relied entirely on donations from our Leaders employers but to continue to offer all of these great things and keep this group FREE we need our community’s help!! PLEASE STOP INTO HELPING HANDS AND SHOP AND HELP OUR GIRLS UNPLUGGED GROUP!

Today was our March GIRLS UNPLUGGED meeting at Ingersoll Middle School and we had about 40 girls in attendance!! ⭐️⭐️ Our guest speaker today was was Veterinarian, Sarah Phipps, with Spoon River Animal Clinic. Dr. Sarah shared with the girls that when she was a young girl, like all of them, she had dreams and goals of becoming a veterinarian! She talked to them about what it takes to go to college and veterinarian school become a veterinarian. We talked about what a typical day in her office looks like and some different things that she has experienced. Dr. Sarah also shared some awesome pictures and fun videos of some of the animals she has helped over the years. At the end of the meeting she let all of us look at some of the equipment and cool things she uses to do her job everyday! 🐈🐈‍⬛🐕🐿️🦡🐖🐄The girls had LOTS of questions and loved hearing all of Dr. Sarah’s stories! The meeting was filled with smiles, laughter and OOOO’s and AWWWW’s while looking at her pictures and watching her videos!!

Today we had our February GIRLS UNPLUGGED meeting at Ingersoll Middle School with 30+ girls!!!🤩🤩 Our guest speaker was police Officer, Candi Buhl. Officer Candi spoke to the girls about cell phones, social media and staying safe when using the internet. As a group we discussed good and bad uses for phones and social media and how to be aware when using them. Officer Candi also warned the girls about how everyone has a “ digital footprint” and how it is permanent and acts as a lasting digital reputation. For our activities, we played a “being mindful” dice game and a NO HANDS cup challenge! It was an awesome meeting, full of great information, some fun competition and of course—lots of smiles and laughter!

Today we had our January GIRLS UNPLUGGED meeting at Ingersoll Middle School and we hosted about 35 girls!!!🤩🤩 Our guest speaker was Bailey Norton, RN. Bailey spoke to the girls about Positive body image, positive self-talk and learning who we are on the inside. She shared some personal stories and challenges that she faced when she was their age and throughout high school and college. As a group we discussed our strengths and weaknesses and what it means to be confident. For our activity, we decorated “I Am” statement mirrors and then played a group activity about communicating. It was a FUN meeting, full of great information and lots of smiles and laughter!

🤩INCREDIBLE!!🤩 Today we had our November GIRLS UNPLUGGED meeting at Ingersoll Middle School and we hosted an amazing group of 50 girls!!!🤩🤩We welcomed a guest speaker, Cassie Stone, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with Graham Health Systems. Cassie led a great discussion about healthy habits, daily hygiene and normal female body changes. She shared with them suggestions and tips on how to stay healthy and how to create some easy everyday healthy habits. Then, we talked about our bodies from head to toe and how important it is to take care of our entire body with daily hygiene practices! Because of a generous special grant awarded to our Girls Unplugged group from the Spoon River College Foundation, we were able to purchase several products to make individual “Confidence Kits” for all of the girls. Each participant received small cloth bag and markers to use to decorate it. They then filled their decorated bags with several trial-size personal hygiene products. The bags were intentionally created to be the perfect size for them to keep at school in their lockers. To end our meeting we participated in a fun healthy habits relay race to practice the things we’d discussed with our speaker! It was a OUTSTANDING meeting, full of great information and questions from the girls to Cassie, and lots of smiles, laughter and of course…. FUN!
