Southside Trauma-Informed Community Network Promoting and enhancing individual & community resilience. Rather, we embrace change-thinking that instills a sense of hope and dispels hopelessness.

Southside TICN exists to create a community of wholeness and to recreate the norm from trauma to resilience by building awareness, knowledge and engagement of trauma recovery. As individuals and organizations, we set free limiting mindsets that have led to practices, policies, and institutions that write off children, youth, adults or families.

In 1800, Petersburg, Virginia, held one of the largest and most significant populations of free Black people in the United States, concentrated particularly on Pocahontas Island. As a thriving, yet restricted, urban community, these free Black residents operated as skilled artisans, such as barbers, blacksmiths, and boatmen, amid a larger, volatile, and oppressed slave society.
The Pocahontas neighborhood was a primary residential area and, in the 1800s, was a thriving hub for the free Black community, with many working along the riverfront.
Free Black residents worked as barbers, blacksmiths, boatmen, stable keepers, and caterers. Many were property owners in the Blandford and Pocahontas neighborhoods. Despite their freedom, they were subject to strict regulations, including the requirement to carry "free papers" to prove their status.
Petersburg had the largest number of free Black people of any Virginia town or city during this period.
Context of 1800: The year 1800 was marked by Gabriel's Insurrection, a widespread slave conspiracy with a major branch in Petersburg, which heightened tension for both enslaved and free Black people.
Free Black residents during this period faced severe limitations on their liberties, including a lack of voting rights and the constant threat of being falsely accused of being enslaved.
