🐾An Announcement from The Furever Project🐾

After more than six wonderful, life‑changing years of dedicated rescue work, The Furever Project will officially close its doors on September 30, 2026. This decision was not made lightly. As we reflect on a journey filled with overwhelming highs and heartbreaking lows, our hearts overflow with gratitude.

During these six years, we have had the honor of taking in and helping some of the most vulnerable and voiceless dogs. Many arrived in critical condition, in urgent need of lifesaving care. Many were suffering through nightmares of neglect and abuse. Others had simply, and heartbreakingly, been abandoned and discarded by those who saw them as disposable or tossed away because they were no longer wanted; many simply because they were old.

The Furever Project welcomed each of these dogs into our loving care placing them in safe foster homes. We then had the privilege of watching them heal, both body and soul, becoming whole again as they patiently waited for their own “furever” families.

While this chapter is ending, the legacy of The Furever Project lives on in every dog whose life we touched; in every pup curled up on a couch tonight, safe, wanted, and loved.❤

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Changing a rescued dogs name can be a good thing.

“It ain’t what they call you, it’s what you answer to.” — W.C. Fields
I often think about this quote when rescue dogs are given new names.

A name is more than just a word or a label for a dog — a name is attached to experiences, emotions, tone and memories.

For some rescue dogs, their old name may have been coupled with punishment, spoken with anger, associated with fear, anxiety, neglect, or confusion.

Giving a dog a new name is not about erasing their past. It’s about creating new, safe, positive associations. When introduced with kindness, patience, play, treats, affection and trust, a new name can become the sound that predicts good things instead of bad.

A new name can be a fresh, new beginning and can provide an opportunity to rebuild broken trust, build new bonds and create feelings of safety.

There may be concern that changing a dog’s name will confuse them or may cause some form of emotional distress, but dogs really don’t see their names in the same way that we do.

Dogs really don’t care what we call them, as long as that name is associated with positive experiences it will always be a good name.

The way a new name is introduced and taught is important. Care should be taken not to attach any negative associations with the new name.

The new name should always be paired with something positive whenever your dog hears the sound. Call the new name and every time your dog reacts, responds or looks at you, reward this with a treat, lots of praise, a game or a toy.

Keep repeating this and dogs will quickly begin to associate their new name with good things and will start responding to the new sound in a positive way.

A previous name may be linked to a traumatic past, but a new name can be the beginning of a happy ever after, a forever home and a first step in creating a new future.

LISTEN TO THE WHISPERS

“Whispers” are soft, subtle and so easy to miss, but paying attention can prevent them turning into “shouts” and prevent situations from escalating.

I believe dogs would be so grateful if we made the effort to learn their language. So many dogs spend their lives trying to communicate through “whispers” - subtle signals that are overlooked, misunderstood, or corrected. When we learn to notice those signals, we create a world that feels safer and more predictable for them.

Body language is one of the only ways that dogs can let us know how they are feeling. When we know how they’re feeling, we can intervene, help them feel safe and prevent emotions from boiling over.

Body language can be subtle and fleeting, but with careful observation and knowing what to look for most of us can learn to recognize and understand what our dogs are saying.

It’s always important to look at the context, the situation and especially what the rest of the body is doing when understanding their language.

Being able to understand a dog’s emotional state through their body language helps us to predict behaviour, prevent potential problems or simply allows us to just enjoy observing what they are feeling.

Although dogs each have their own unique personalities and distinct way of communicating, there are many common signs that can provide valuable insight. We just need to take the time to learn and notice.

We owe it to dogs to really understand them. They spend their lives learning our words, our routines, our expectations and living by our rules. Making the effort to learn their language is one of the most meaningful ways we can improve their wellbeing.

Renting with pets is about to get easier in the nation’s capital.

Washington, D.C. is set to enact “Roscoe’s Law,” which bans breed and size restrictions on cats and dogs in rental housing. The law also caps pet rent and security deposits and includes funding to support shelters that help people experiencing homelessness keep their pets.

Supporters call the move a landmark step for pet housing rights, saying it could prevent unnecessary surrenders by helping families stay housed together.
