Music is more than performance-it's a powerful tool for building discipline, confidence, and connection.

As part of The Washington Tattoo's Music Wellness programming in Louisiana, I had the opportunity to work with Mr. Moran's percussion students.

Drawing on my time with the U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, we shared the history and traditions of American rudimental drumming.

The principles that make great musicians-listening, teamwork, and perseverance-are the same ones that build resilience.

Thank you to Mr. Moran and his students for the warm welcome and dedication to their craft.

🎺 Honoring Heritage and Harmony: A Look Back at

The Washington Tattoo was proud to partner with George Mason University’s The 8th Green Machine Regiment Band, the Doughboy Foundation, and the 22d Battalion Grey Coats Fife and Drum Corps at !

We were thrilled to bring this massive musical collaboration to the Association of the United States Army - AUSA National Annual Meeting & Exposition.

Performing at that historic gathering carried deep meaning for us. The very concept of a "Military Tattoo" is rooted in 17th-century heritage. It originates from the Dutch phrase "doe den tap toe" ("turn off the tap")—a ceremonial drumbeat deployed by garrison commanders at dusk to signify curfew and call soldiers back to their quarters.

Over the centuries, this routine curfew evolved into a majestic showcase of camaraderie, precision marching, and military excellence.

Our ensemble took that heritage to heart with a packed schedule of performances across the event:

🥁The 22d Battalion Grey Coats Fife and Drum Corps (shoutout to Billy!) brought history to life by playing at three major events: the U.S. Army Reserve and National Guard Breakfast, the Exhibit Hall Opening, and the prestigious President’s Reception.

🥁The Doughboy Foundation String Quartet also delivered a beautiful performance during the President’s Reception.

🥁The Doughboy Foundation Brass Quintet kept the momentum going into Day 2, performing for the Exhibit Hall Opening.

🥁And we have to give our musicians massive credit—they went above and beyond by delivering four powerhouse performances on Monday alone, including the Army Family Forum!

Recently, The Washington Tattoo visited Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to share the power of music.

When we make music together, like in a group drumming session, it builds connection and breaks through isolation.

Making music with others syncs us up, 🥁literally and emotionally.

It is an honor to connect with service members and veterans and show them how shared music-making offers a safe, grounded way to restore a sense of control and purpose.

It builds confidence and a sense of ownership over their choices and their environment.

Admission to the Pig Roast is $20, with all proceeds supporting vital Veterans causes.
