Flashback Friday at the Hutton Settlement picks up when Levi Hutton found himself in a bit of a predicament...

May Arkwright Hutton did not come close to the nineteenth-century ideal of American womanhood. May was vocal and opinionated. She always held her own in the sometimes earthy give-and-take of life in the Coeur d'Alenes. Firm in her convictions and staunch in her support of labor, May not only spoke out but also supported the men carrying union cards that had been corralled in an enclosure at Wardner Junction known as the bullpen. When Civil Rights disappeared, May appeared. Levi had landed in the stockade. May lost no time trying to free him. A popular daily visitor to the prisoners in the bullpen, May harassed the authorities and lectured in their own salty language the troops sent to guard the miners. May appealed to Levi's fellow Masons and, apparently through their intervention, Levi was released.

An investigation followed the lifting of martial law, and a coroner's jury ruled Levi to have been "a willing tool of the rioters." With this verdict, he lost his job with the Northern Pacific Railroad. Which meant he was free to work full-time at the Hercules mine.

Our mission has always been to support the child to the best of our ability. While that process has looked different over the years, our foundational drive to give them a safe home and family has stayed the same. As our Campus Director Krissy says, "Our goal when kids come here is that this is the last place they land before they graduate high school or they go back home with their family. And we don't care which one it is, we're going to support it the entire way through."

Flashback Friday at the Hutton Settlement gets explosive.

"Adversity is a powerful teacher. Embrace its lessons and emerge stronger."

With a gun at his ribs, Levi Hutton followed orders to stop his train at every town and blow his signature whistle; more masked men boarded at every stop. When they reached Kellogg just after noon, about 200 armed men got off and advanced toward Bunker Hill. Near 2:00PM the mill was blown up, rattling Wardner and Kellogg. The union men got back on the train and directed Levi to return and at each station men jumped off and strolled home.

In Boise, Governor Frank Steunenberg learned of the explosion 5 days later at which time he declared martial law. Federal troops herded all men carrying union cards into a bullpen in Wardner Junction. "No men were released on writs of habeus corpus." Hutton was held as a reluctant witness. He recounted the events of that day for authorities but would not identify the masked miners as his life would be threatened.

Next week, we will explore how May came to the rescue.

Every garden starts with a seed buried in the dark and every child deserves the same chance to grow.

Meet Trevor. He grew up at Hutton, spending his afternoons in the garden — hands in the soil, learning patience, learning care. That garden planted something in him that never stopped growing. Today, Trevor works at Hutton, teaching the next generation of kids the same lessons the garden once taught him.

Just like the seasons, a child's journey at Hutton has its own cycle of growth:
🌱 Spring — new beginnings, roots taking hold in a safe and stable place ☀️ Summer — growth in confidence, skills, and independence 🍂 Fall — harvesting the lessons learned, seeing progress take shape ❄️ Winter — resting, reflecting, and preparing to bloom again

Trevor is proof that when you give a child the tools, the time, and the trust to grow, they don't just survive, they flourish. And then, they turn around and empower the next child to do the same.
