VOLUNTEERS NEEDED (Invasive Species Removal at Ebenezer Swamp)

The University of Montevallo is seeking volunteers to assist with invasive flora removal at the Ebenezer Swamp Ecological Preserve on Saturday, February 21st, 2026 at 10:00 AM.

This effort will focus primarily on the removal of Chinese privet (Ligustrum sinense), an aggressive invasive shrub that threatens native plant communities and overall wetland health.

Please dress appropriately for the weather and we recommend wearing long pants with closed-toe shoes or boots. Expect moderate physical activity and potentially muddy terrain.

All tools, gloves, and instruction will be provided. If you own hand tools suitable for shrub removal and would like to bring them, you are welcome to do so. Removal will be conducted manually (No chemicals will be used.)

Water and light snacks will be available. Please bring a refillable cup or water bottle.

Your time and effort directly support the restoration and protection of one of Montevallo’s most valuable ecological areas.

Hola Amigos!

This Saturday, join us for our first bilingual guided hike at Ebenezer Swamp Ecological Preserve for Spanish and English speakers!

Este sábado usted y su familia están invitados a caminar con nosotros en la Reserva Ecológica Ebenezer Swamp. El camino es de 2 kilómetros en total.

This nature hike will go down the trail and boardwalk, and the group will hike back to the parking lot for a total of 1.2 miles. The difficulty level for the trail is low, so beginners and families with young kids should have no issues keeping up. This event is free and open to the public. The group will meet in the big field at 1 p.m.

We offer field trips for groups K-12 to connect students to the natural world around them. Visit us at the preserve, observatory, or in the garden!

There are a few spots left for Ebenezer's Explorers Day Camp this Friday, March 8. School is out on Friday, so we are hosting a fun, STEM day camp for Kindergarten through Fifth Graders. Drop-off and Pick-up are located on UM Main Campus, camp is from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with optional aftercare available for an additional fee. Day camp is $55 for one camper, lunch and snack are provided. There are scholarships and multi-child discounts available. There is more information available on our webpage montevallo.edu/eeprograms.
