Class is in session. Momma is showing these babies how to find food. How cool is this. She scratches and then says "right there, look" and all the chicks do.

🦚 Ever wonder what's really going on behind all those peacock feathers? 🦚

Our peacocks at Catawba Junction Wildlife and Farm Sanctuary spend a lot of their day showing off, strutting around, and yelling at the chickens as if they're the supervisors of the entire farm. But have you ever watched closely when they fan out those incredible tail feathers?

If you look carefully, you'll notice the feathers actually vibrate back and forth incredibly fast, creating a strange rattling or buzzing sound. Some people even compare it to the sound of a rattlesnake!

This behavior is called a "train-rattling display." Male peacocks shake their feathers at a specific frequency that causes the long tail feathers to shimmer while producing low-frequency vibrations and sounds. Researchers believe these vibrations can be detected by nearby females, making the display even more impressive than what we can see with our eyes alone.

So while we humans are admiring the beautiful colors, the peacocks are putting on a full sensory performance—visual effects, sound effects, and vibrations all at the same time!

Next time you're driving by the rescue, take a moment to watch one of our peacocks in action. You might hear the rattling before you notice the feathers moving.

Nature is amazing, and sometimes the coolest things are hidden right behind the feathers. 🦚✨

Have you ever noticed the rattling sound a peacock makes when displaying?

The Hidden Side of Wildlife Rescue/In Search of...

When most people think about wildlife rescue, they picture the baby raccoons, fawns, opossums, foxes, owls, and all the incredible animals that come through our doors.

What they don't always see is what it takes behind the scenes to care for them.

These photos show just a small glimpse of the daily reality at Catawba Junction Wildlife.

Every single day we wash mountains of blankets, towels, bedding, heating pad covers, hammocks, cleaning cloths, and enclosure liners. During baby season, we routinely run 10–12 loads of laundry per day. Every animal needs clean bedding, clean nesting materials, and a sanitary environment to recover and thrive.

Then there are the dishes.

Bottles, syringes, bowls, feeding dishes, mixing containers, formula equipment, and enrichment items create an overwhelming amount of dishes every day. Right now, our dishwasher has broken, so every single item is being washed and sanitized by hand.

The reality is that our appliances work harder than most household appliances ever will. Between wildlife rehabilitation and caring for our sanctuary animals, we put years of wear on them in just a few months.

Our dryer is now beginning to fail, and we're always trying to stay ahead of the next breakdown.

If you are replacing appliances or know someone who is, please consider thinking of us. We are always looking for:

🧺 Washers
🧺 Dryers
🍽️ Dishwashers

Even if we don't need an appliance immediately, we can store it for future use. We typically go through dishwashers about every six months and washers and dryers every few months due to the constant workload they endure.

Your donation of a used appliance may not seem glamorous, but it directly helps us provide clean bedding, sanitized feeding equipment, and proper care for the hundreds of animals that depend on us every year.

Thank you for helping us keep wild things wild and care for those that are not. Every towel washed, every bowl sanitized, and every load of laundry completed helps give an animal a second chance.

❤️ If you have an appliance to donate or know someone who might, please send us a message. Sharing this post helps too.

Sometimes the animals that need us most are the ones the world may overlook. ❤️

This sweet little lamb was surrendered to us with a congenital birth defect affecting his mobility. From the very beginning, we knew his journey would look different — filled with extra care, extra patience, and a whole lot of love.

So we got to work.

Using creativity, determination, and a lot of trial and error, we built him a custom wheelchair designed to grow with him as he gets bigger. Watching him learn to move, explore, and enjoy life has already been one of the most rewarding things we’ve ever experienced.

But his care will be lifelong.

He will need ongoing physical therapy, specialized support, mobility adjustments, veterinary care, supplements, bedding, and daily hands-on assistance for the rest of his life. And we are committed to giving him every chance at a happy, comfortable life — because every animal deserves that chance.

We know we cannot do this alone.

We are hoping to build a small core group of monthly supporters who believe in animals like him — the ones who may require more, but who give back even more in love, resilience, and inspiration.

Even a small recurring monthly donation helps provide:
Thank you for believing that every life matters — even the tiniest ones, learning to stand on their own. ❤️
🐑 Veterinary care
🐑 Bedding and mobility support
🐑 Future wheelchair modifications as he grows

As a registered 501(c)(3), all donations are tax-deductible.

If you would like to become part of this little lamb’s journey and help us continue caring for animals with special needs, please consider becoming a monthly donor today.

Thank you for believing that every life matters — even the tiniest ones learning to stand on their own. ❤️

Did you know that Catawba Junction Wildlife is more than just wildlife? We are also a farm sanctuary and home to some very special permanent residents. 🐷🐐🫏🦚🐓🦆🐑

Our family currently includes pigs, goats, donkeys, peacocks, chickens, ducks, and a lamb… with possibly more joining us soon! 🪿

Every day, we are working to make the farm better for them. We don’t always get it perfect, but we are always trying—trying to make life more comfortable, more enriching, and more like the life they deserve.

Please enjoy this video. It’s a little long, but it gives you a glimpse into our nightly feeding routine and the love and care that goes into each evening here on the farm. ❤️ Keep an eye out for the cameo of our two little piglets learning how to make their way to the food trough with the big pigs—it’s too cute to miss!

Thank you for supporting all of our residents, wild and farm alike.

🌿🐑 **A moment we wish we saw more often…** 🐑🌿

Right now, we are absolutely **inundated with babies**—they are coming in by the dozens every single day. Orphaned, injured, alone… needing around-the-clock care.

But every once in a while, we get a moment like this 💛

A mama… doing exactly what she’s supposed to do.
Protecting, nurturing, and keeping her babies safe and close.

Watching these little ones huddled up underneath her is a reminder of what nature intended—and something we are always so incredibly grateful to witness.

✨ **This is the goal. This is the win.** ✨

While we will continue to step in for the ones that need us, moments like this give us hope—and a chance to just breathe for a second.

📹 (Watch this sweet family soak up some peace and safety)

💛 If you’d like to help us continue caring for the many babies still arriving daily:
• Donations keep milk, supplies, and medical care going
• Volunteers are needed now more than ever

Because for every one of these… there are dozens still depending on us.
