The first word that comes to mind when we think back on our weekend in Maine is MAGICAL. Even the license plates say “VACATIONLAND” and Maine certainly lives up to every bit of it!

The history, the charming 128-year-old Castine Inn where we stayed, the gorgeous homes, and the dramatic coastline all came together to create one spectacular weekend. Our focus was exploration—both on land and sea—and Maine did not disappoint.

Our daytime kayak excursion took us across the water, zigzagging between buoys, sailboats, and other watercraft anchored in Castine Bay. A refreshing dip in the sea was the perfect respite from the summer sun halfway through our paddle. Later, we gathered back at the inn for an exquisite gourmet meal prepared by the innkeeper and her amazing staff.

Saturday morning we had plenty of time to explore on our own. Some walked through town, while others checked out local sights and the farmers market. We explored a trail beside a local lighthouse, enjoyed some gorgeous sandy beach time, and savored local seafood for dinner before making our way back to the harbor for the evening’s adventure.

Once the sun went down, we set out across the dark water toward the many small islands in the bay. The bioluminescence is best seen during the first two weeks after a new moon, when the sea is at its darkest—and we were lucky enough to experience it at its most spectacular.

As we followed the coastline of several islands, the sparkles and streaks in the water seemed to grow brighter as night fell. Every swish of a paddle created a shimmering dance of light from bioluminescent phytoplankton called dinoflagellates—sometimes referred to as the fireflies of the sea. Unlike fireflies, which use their light to attract mates, these tiny organisms glow to scare off or distract predators. Watching the water light up with every stroke was simply unforgettable.

And the magic didn’t stop there. We were mesmerized by the incredible stargazing and even caught an occasional streak from the Perseid meteor shower. Our guide Karen, the owner of Castine Kayak Adventures, gave us a fascinating talk about the sea creatures below and the constellations above, along with fantastic paddling instruction. She is truly a wealth of knowledge—and an absolute gem to boot!

What an incredible weekend of adventure, nature, friendship, and a little bit of magic! 💙🌊

Our next kayak adventure is already full, but if this sounds like your kind of expedition, make sure you’re on our email list so you’ll be notified next year when registration opens!

Last weekend we had the pleasure of hosting our second Mom & Me Squirrel Clinic with Missouri Hunting Heritage Federation, Inc. Two youths, two adult women and a scattering of mentors made for an amazing time.

We completed their Hunter Education and spent time learning about fi****ms. The next day we learned about squirrel biology and conservation, then took our new knowledge to the range for live fire. Participants even hit the pond for a little bluegill fishing during their downtime.

The willingness to learn and eagerness to try new things is probably our favorite part of our Learn 2 Hunt camps! We love taking unsure and questioning participants and seeing them transform into comfortable and adept hunters.

If gaining skills in a non-competitive, knowledge-based atmosphere appeals to you we’d encourage you to sign up for one of our Learn 2 Hunt camps and learn what it takes to become a comfortable and self sufficient outdoorswoman.

🏕️ What an Incredible Weekend in the Outdoors! 🌲

This past weekend, women from across the area came together to build skills, confidence, and connections through hands-on outdoor learning and adventure.

Participants learned essential wilderness survival skills, including fire starting, plant and animal identification, water safety, outdoor preparedness, camping fundamentals, and even basket weaving using natural materials. These activities not only taught practical outdoor skills but also encouraged creativity, self-reliance, and a deeper connection with nature.

More importantly, attendees gained the confidence that comes from learning they can safely and successfully enjoy the outdoors. Watching women step outside their comfort zones, try new experiences, and support one another throughout the weekend was truly inspiring.

Thank you to everyone who attended, our instructors who generously shared their knowledge, and the volunteers who helped make this experience possible. Together, we created a weekend filled with learning, laughter, and empowerment.

Here's to more adventures, more learning, and more women feeling at home in the great outdoors. 🌿🔥🧺⛺

What a fantastic way to kick off National Moth Week! 🌙🦋

Friday night, we welcomed a great group of curious nature lovers for our Night of the Living Moth with wildHERness. Missouri Master Naturalist Amy Rush Howard captivated us with a fascinating presentation about the incredible life cycle, beauty, and importance of moths before leading us into the woods for an after-dark adventure.

Using a few different moth lures, we discovered an amazing assortment of moths, along with butterflies, beetles, and many other nocturnal (and not-so-nocturnal) insects. Every stop brought a new surprise, reminding us just how much wildlife comes alive after the sun goes down.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an evening of discovery and exploration. And we would especially like to thank our amazing friends at Powell Gardens for being such lovely hosts. It was a beautiful night to connect with nature, learn something new, and celebrate these often-overlooked nighttime pollinators. We hope you'll join us for another adventure soon!
