The Legion’s Mobile Canteen Unit was requested for services at a structure fire this afternoon on Austin Road in Camden Township. It’s almost time to transition our equipment from summer operations that help prevent heat illness to winter operations.

And, as always, we are always accepting donations to the Hillsdale American Legion to allow us to continue providing these services to our Hometown Heroes!

This program started with an idea turned conversation turned action.

A generous donation from Hillsdale Hospital kicked us off and the Hillsdale County Fire Association donated their old air trailer which we refurbished for our use.

In August 2021, we started this with a cooler and a ton of Gatorade/water.

And since then, we’ve continued to expand, piece by piece as donations have allowed.

As the year passed, we listened to our firemen and first responders and vastly expanded to add two commercial canopy systems, industrial misting fans, a generator to power our equipment, ice packs, a table, chairs and more.

Tomorrow, we’ll be adding a small chest freezer to the trailer unit to expand the amount of ice we have on hand and cut out the need to stop for ice on our way to an incident.

None of this would be possible without the generous donations from this community’s businesses and residents alike.

Thank you all!

The Canteen Unit responded to a residential fire this morning in Wright Township where we deployed our canopy, misting fans, and ice packs and provided Gatorade and water to help out our friends from Wright-Waldron, Hudson, Morenci, Woodbridge, Alvordton, Pioneer and Hillsdale City Fire Departments. The heat and humidity combined this morning was 🥵. Thank you for allowing us to serve you!

The Canteen Unit responded to a structure fire this afternoon in Wright Township where a barn was completely destroyed by flame.

Although temps could’ve been worse, we provided a misting fan and hydrating fluids to our friends at Wright-Waldron Fire Department, and firefighters from Alvordton and Pioneer, Ohio (and a few lingering state troopers as well).

The Legion’s Canteen responded to a residential structure fire in the city of Reading this afternoon and quickly got to work setting up the new misting fan. Today’s heat index (and tomorrow is going to be WORSE) make it important more then ever to help cool our firefighting friends down and provide proper hydration fluids (and cold compress packs to!).

They made quick work of today’s fire, clearing the scene within two hours and there were no reported injuries.
