Dear Undestructable Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that Undestructable is dissolving effective immediately.

It is important to us that we are transparent with our beloved community about why we’ve come to this conclusion. It was not a quick nor an easy decision, but unfortunately a necessary one. In addition to organizational and financial capacity issues, nationwide funding cuts to survivor services have made it impossible for Undestructable to continue sustainably.

We intimately understand the justified anger and grief that comes with existing under an administration in which the livelihood of survivors and other vulnerable groups is not valued. We honor the five years of impact Undestructable has made since our founding in 2020 and ask that you use your position to protect those in need and to fight the fascism that actively furthers the marginalization of those already suffering.

We are deeply grateful to each and every one of you in our community; for your time, gifts, collaboration, and trust; for everyone who believed in our mission. Thank you. We couldn’t have done this without you.

As our society evolves and shifts, and as Undestructable comes to a close, we must find new ways to stay engaged, continue to support local groups doing this life-saving work, and always advocate for systems that center survivors’ safety, justice, and agency. We ask that you do not lose hope, even in times like this, as the movement to end intimate partner violence and gender based violence is far from over.

IT’S FUNDRAISING SEASON!! And we have news to share about what the future holds!

Since March 2022, we have served over 100 survivors of intimate partner abuse through our job-readiness and self-sufficiency classes. Our custom curriculum helps participants rediscover their skills and talents, create a budget, craft a visually appealing resume and cover letter, navigate job search platforms, and use Google Workspace. Survivors progress through the program as a cohort so they can build a community of support—and we pay them $20 per hour for their time to help them on their journey to achieve financial independence.

By listening to feedback from the folks we serve, we have learned over the past few years that there is nothing like our programming and that survivors want and need sustainable post-crisis solutions. We have seen exponential growth in the number of survivors we are serving and the number of referrals we receive from community partners. As the cost of living continues to rise across the country, we are being called to make this work available to even more survivors.

In the new year, we will answer this call by shifting our focus and reimagining the model for our programs so that we can reach more survivors through expanded partnerships. We will continue to provide trauma-informed, survivor-centered job readiness training while growing our programming to be accessible to organizations across the country. With creativity, innovative thinking, and community support, we know we can amplify our impact. We invite you to join the call and help us bring this vision to life.

Really. Truly. Seriously. Become a FUNdraiser with us this year!

Fundraising is something that nonprofits do 365 days a year and it is no easy feat. So, every year we run our WE GIVE A S**T peer-2-peer fundraiser that has almost singlehandedly sustained our work these last 3 years and we do our best to make it fun and easy for both our fundraising team and our donor community.

Peer-2-Peer fundraising is only effective when we have passionate people hitting the virtual and literal pavement with us. We would love to have your support this year by volunteering with us as a fundraiser. You can join as an individual or gather a group of friends and create a team. AND you have until November to decide!

Undestructable provides job skills training and employment opportunities for survivors of intimate partner abuse to create sustainable futures for themselves and the planet.

Since March 2022, we have been working directly with folks who have experienced intimate partner abuse by providing job-readiness and self-sufficiency classes. Over the course of 6 weeks, survivors learn tools to: recognize their own skills; create a budget; craft a visually appealing resume and cover letter; navigate job search platforms; and use Google Workspace. Survivors progress through the curriculum as a cohort so they can build a community of support.

This will continue to be our model until we are able to secure funding to expand our services and bring our future vision to life. Every day we a little bit closer.

When we look back at the past 3 years, we are proud of what we have done as a community and honored to be a part of the stories of so many amazing people! AH-MAZING!

While we stand in the present, reflecting on the past, we are also looking to the future of Undestructable. Everyday we are working toward being able to offer more employment opportunities to our incredible community of survivors. You mights ask, “why is that needed?” Here is why:

💎As many as 60% of folks experiencing IPV will lose their jobs due to reasons linked to their abuse.
💎Folks experiencing IPV lose a combine total of 8 million paid days of work annually.
💎$104,000 is the average cost to survivors over the course of the abuse inflicted upon them.
💎99% of survivors experience economic abuse compounded with other forms of abuse.

How can we affect change when certain truths are not talked about enough?

Our 2SLGBTQ+ community experiences and at higher rates than we see in cis hetro communities. Though the research is still young, and we have a long way to go in understanding these statistics, we think that there is enough information in front of us to do something.

What do you think those stats look like when other identities such as race or religion intersect? You guessed it, those numbers go up more often than not.

We invite you to get uncomfortable. We invite you to educate yourself on what 2SLGBTQ+ represents. We invite you to get uncomfortable with this topic, because it is only within that discomfort that we can grow. We cannot remain silent or complacent, when the facts are right in front of us and we can support or community.

Pride. A month to celebrate, sure. A month to have a visceral sense of joy, totally. ALSO, and most importantly, a month to remember, honor, and respect that our 2SLGBTQ+ community has historically faced and continues to face barriers and hate. Even in 2024, we are witness to the putrid hate being spread across the USA and the rest of the globe. Hate directed at a community that has historically been filled with love, joy, and acceptance. Seriously, WTF?!

Lucia McNeal (she/her) is a social worker, anti-violence advocate, and housing professional. Originally from Iowa, she moved to the Denver area in 2022. She currently works as a Housing Navigator with the Denver Housing Authority.

Lucia has nearly a decade of domestic violence experience in the non-profit sector. Her previous roles include emergency shelter, rapid rehousing and transitional housing, victim witness coordination, case management, and non-profit leadership. She is passionate about trauma informed, survivor-centered community services that prioritize choice and accessibility.

Lucia holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and Certificate in Critical Cultural Competence from the University of Iowa. In her free time, Lucia enjoys cooking, music, and spending quality time with her fiancé and their three cats. Lucia is honored to be a part of Undestructable.
