Happy Thanksgiving from FEED HOCO!
Today, we give thanks for the power of community to nourish, not just with food, but with dignity, compassion, and connection.

To every volunteer, partner, and neighbor who helps us ensure no table goes empty: You are the heart of our mission.

As we gather in gratitude, let’s remember that FOOD IS A HUMAN RIGHT. Together, we build a Howard County where everyone is fed, seen, and valued.

Thanksgiving is almost here. Here are the ways you can donate to help a family in need.

Designated Drop-Off Point: We can meet you at the Miller Library parking lot on Sunday, November 23rd, between 11am and 11:30am or between 3pm and 3:30pm.

Directly at Distribution: You can bring donations directly to the distribution event at the Miller Library on Monday, November 24th, at 4:00 PM. This is the simplest way, as we can get the goods into families' hands immediately.

A quick note on logistics: We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience, but we do not currently have a permanent space or meaningful storage capacity. This is why immediate or near-term drop-offs are essential.

For Financial Donations: If you wish to donate financially, here is the link again: https://www.paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/4257830

Yesterday's food distribution revealed a heartbreaking reality: the lines were tragically long. Despite bringing a much larger than usual supply of food, we were forced to ration it so that every family received something ... maybe enough to sustain them for a few more days. Sadly, the sheer demand meant it was still not enough.

We heard the desperation firsthand, underscoring the severity of the crisis:

Mothers worried about the lack of milk for their children, and fathers expressed the sheer helplessness of the situation.

We've seen a surge in calls from people facing impossible choices: a pregnant woman with no food in her cupboard, a neighbor unable to pay their mortgage, and college students, laid off or struggling, thankful for a box of food.

One individual took a bus for over an hour, with a child in hand, just to collect a single bag of food.

This tragic moment was reminiscent of the difficult days during peak COVID. People waited for hours, many with tears in their eyes and thankful hearts, demonstrating profound dignity. Some even stayed to lend a hand.

To help fill the immediate gap, we are organizing another distribution on Monday, November 24th, at 4:00 PM.

Our resolve will not tire. While the day was exhausting, my legs still tingle and burn with pain, one immobile from injury. We will not rest until hunger ends and the suffering of those in need ceases.

We are deeply grateful for the volunteers from all walks of life who served families yesterday. A huge, heartfelt thank you to the Maryland Food Bank, Howard County Government, and the many local farms, individuals, and corporations who generously donated supplies and support.

This Saturday, we’re hosting a countywide food collection drive to support residents affected by the ongoing federal government shutdown and the suspension of SNAP benefits. The drive will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at locations across Howard County.

Community members can drop off non-perishable food and essential household items at any of these five collection sites:

- Gary J Arthur Community Center, 2400 MD 97, Cooksville

- George Howard Building, 3430 Court House Drive, Ellicott City

- Department of Recreation & Parks Headquarters, 7120 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia

- North Laurel Community Center, 9411 Whiskey Bottom Road, Laurel

- Rockburn Branch Park - Pfeiffer’s Corner Schoolhouse, 6109 Rockburn Branch Park Road, Elkridge

Following the countywide Food Collection Drive, items collected will be donated to governmental, nonprofit, and educational partners including: the Community Action Council (CAC) Howard County Food Bank, the Food Pantry at the Howard County MultiService Center, Howard Community College’s Fueling Dragons Food Pantry, Columbia Community Care, the Howard County Muslim Council, and the Indian Cultural Association of Howard County (ICA) and Feed HoCo.

These vital community organizations continue to serve thousands of families experiencing food insecurity in Howard County.

Requested items include: rice, pasta and sauce, soups, tuna, peanut butter, beans, cereal, juice, diapers, cleaning supplies, and hygiene products. With these partners, we’re working to ensure that all our neighbors have access to food, dignity, and hope.
