Talk about community impact!

On October 8th hundreds of employees from Henkel volunteered at non-profits in the community. Wheel It Forward was fortunate to have an awesome team who helped us assemble needed equipment for our library branches located across Connecticut. Over time that equipment will keep hundreds of our neighbors safe, mobile and independent at home.

For six years Wheel It Forward has never said no to anybody who needed basic durable medical equipment. That is only possible because of wonderful corporate partners like Henkel.

A few months after our volunteers launched Wheel It Forward in October 2020 a small team from Greenwich Lions Club walked into our Stamford library branch with a check in hand. They were literally the first organization to support our mission and we had no idea they were coming. They said that they heard about what we were doing and wanted to help. That act of kindness helped thousands of people in our community over time, and gave our team confidence that others in the community would support us as well. Strangely, while handing us a generous check, they were apologetic that they couldn't help more because it was mid-Covid and they were not able to do fundraising events that they would typically do.

Sincere thanks to all Lions Clubs International members for their support and encouragement that has enabled Wheel It Forward to get to this point!

Six years ago, we quietly opened our doors

Since then, tens of thousands of people have reached out to borrow or donate equipment. That number is meaningful — but it's also just a number.

Maybe everything we've built over the last six years existed for one reason: to help a 12-year-old girl we will never meet.

She traveled from Antigua to New York on what was supposed to be a week-long holiday. Instead, she became ill, was hospitalized, and received a diagnosis no family should ever hear. A rare, fatal brain cancer. Her wish — her one wish — was to go home.

Her doctor at a local children's hospital had never heard of Wheel It Forward and was scrambling to find the equipment to fulfill that wish. She reached out to us cold -

"We have a lovely 12 y/o...her wish is to go back to Antigua. We would like to make this happen as soon as possible given her prognosis but need a high-back reclining wheelchair that she can travel back to Antigua with."

Our library branches always have high back reclining wheelchairs and they picked one up the next day.

We don't know how her story ended but we are hopeful that she made it home in time to feel the warmth of familiar air, to hear voices she recognized, to be surrounded by the people who loved her most.

But we know this: if you have ever donated to Wheel It Forward, volunteered your time, or simply told a friend we exist — you made that possible.

Six years. Tens of thousands of people helped. And somewhere in that number, a little girl who just wanted to go home.

Alway an honor to participate at Stand Down events that raise awareness for services available to veterans in our community. Also gratifying to run into so many veterans who have been benefiting from our new kind of community library by both borrowing and donating equipment.

A Wheel It Forward Story

A woman arrived at our Quinnipiac University School Of Health Sciences North Haven branch carrying a sliding and swiveling shower transfer bench. All of our branches always have basic shower transfer benches, but we rarely have this more sophisticated piece of equipment. Minutes earlier, a borrower had called asking if we had exactly that.

Our Operations Manager, Sue, could hardly believe the timing. When she told the donor somebody had just called in need of that specific piece of equipment the woman broke down in tears. While it may seem strange that somebody who comes to donate equipment to our library would cry, but it actually happens all the time. Her mother had recently passed away, and she said her mom would have been so happy to know her equipment could now help someone else.

Sue started crying too. They shared a hug, then carried on with their day — reminded that every donated item carries a story, a person, and the power to make a real difference.

Just another Friday morning at our Newtown Branch. Five families will pick up equipment to keep their loved ones safe, mobile, and independent at home. Separately, five families will donate equipment to our library.

If you know of anybody who can benefit from borrowing or donating durable medical equipment - Wheel It Forward. Now with branches in Stamford, Bridgeport - Stratford, Newtown, North Haven, Hamden and New Haven.

Drop off your gently used equipment at the HSS and Stamford Health locations listed on the flyer. Your donation helps neighbors in our community access the equipment they need while keeping usable equipment out of landfills.
