A Wheel It Forward Story

A woman arrived at our Quinnipiac University School Of Health Sciences North Haven branch carrying a sliding and swiveling shower transfer bench. All of our branches always have basic shower transfer benches, but we rarely have this more sophisticated piece of equipment. Minutes earlier, a borrower had called asking if we had exactly that.

Our Operations Manager, Sue, could hardly believe the timing. When she told the donor somebody had just called in need of that specific piece of equipment the woman broke down in tears. While it may seem strange that somebody who comes to donate equipment to our library would cry, but it actually happens all the time. Her mother had recently passed away, and she said her mom would have been so happy to know her equipment could now help someone else.

Sue started crying too. They shared a hug, then carried on with their day — reminded that every donated item carries a story, a person, and the power to make a real difference.

Just another Friday morning at our Newtown Branch. Five families will pick up equipment to keep their loved ones safe, mobile, and independent at home. Separately, five families will donate equipment to our library.

If you know of anybody who can benefit from borrowing or donating durable medical equipment - Wheel It Forward. Now with branches in Stamford, Bridgeport - Stratford, Newtown, North Haven, Hamden and New Haven.

Do you have durable medical equipment in excellent condition that you no longer need? Give it a second life by donating it to Wheel It Forward!

Drop off your gently used equipment at the HSS and Stamford Health locations listed on the flyer. Your donation helps neighbors in our community access the equipment they need while keeping usable equipment out of landfills.

Meet Marshall Dunbar. 👋🏼

Marshall and his wife Cindy are volunteers for Wheels for the World, an organization that refurbishes wheelchairs, helping give them a second life and provide mobility to people around the world. We are proud to provide wheelchairs that we can't repair to this worthy cause. In 2025 we gave them over 300 wheelchairs.

Marshall’s van is packed with wheelchairs… Think you can guess how many fit inside? 🤔

Reminder: Hazardous Waste Day is this Saturday, July 11th, from 9am–2pm at Rippowam School in Stamford.

For the fifth year in a row, Hazardous Waste Day is also Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Collection Day, thanks to Dan Colleluori, Director of Recycling and Sanitation for the City of Stamford.

If you have lightly used, no-longer-needed medical equipment that is in excellent condition, this is a perfect time to donate it. Your donation keeps equipment out of the landfill and helps neighbors in our community get the devices they need.

✅ When: Saturday, July 11th, 9am–2pm
✅ Where: Rippowam School, Stamford
✅ What to bring: Clean, gently used medical equipment (wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, etc.)
