Meaningful Movies is returning after a hiatus. There are some changes. We have very much appreciated the use of the room at McMinnville Cooperative ministries to show these social justice issue documentaries, but have made the decision to change the venue to the home of Liz Marlia-Stein. Meaningful Movies will not necessarily be shown every month, but announcements about these movies will be posted on this site. If you would like to get on the email list to be informed about future Meaningful Movies, please email Liz at [email protected].

*I have posted about the (February) Meaningful Movie on a separate Yamhill County Peace & Justice FB posting. This short documentary about health care in this country will be shown on two different dates in February - with both matinee and evening showings - in order to accommodate peoples' schedules.

We look forward to seeing you soon at the movies!

REMINDER: THIS THURSDAY, 10/12.

Yamhill County Peace & Justice presents October's Meaningful Movie "Americonned".

AMERICONNED is a film about income inequality in the US and the tragic destabilizing effects on Americans. Radical inequality has led to radicalization at every level of society, and this powerful documentary depicts what happens when America hits its tipping point by looking back through our history at similar critical moments of instability. The labor movement of the past was born in times like these. We must restore the path to the once great middle class that now suffers in silence. Despite an increase in productivity in recent decades, compensation for the American worker has been stagnant. In addition, 47% of American jobs are at high risk of being lost to automation and A.I. by the mid-2030s. In the United States, there has been an upward redistribution of over $50 trillion from the bottom 90% to the top 1% over the last 40 years. Politicians on both sides of the aisle have created a protection racket for the rich, and corporations are deliberately crushing unions. In this David vs. Goliath story, Chris Smalls and Derrick Palmer lead a movement to unionize Amazon workers for the first time, after the corporation fired Smalls for speaking up for workers' rights. They are inspiring legions of workers to, as the late, great Congressman John Lewis said, get into "good trouble."

Yamhill Peace & Justice presents "Americonned" as part of our monthly Meaningful Movies series.

Synopsis of "Americonned": "Over the past few generations, millions in the middle class have been pushed to the edge and even into poverty. Shamed into believing that if they tried harder things might work out, the middle class has been silent. No more. Americonned exposes the inside story, showing how corporations have wormed their way into government, laying out why the middle class should rise, and how it should do it.

Meaningful Movies – hosted by Peace & Justice Yamhill County – will be returning to the 2nd Thursday of the month. We hoped the First Friday of the month would be a better day to shwo the film. And for many reasons it was. But this day conflicts with 3rd Street Friday events. Which creates a situation of limited parking spots. So, we are returning to showing Meaningful Movies on the 2nd Thursday. See you there and then!
