Looking for something that will fill gaps in your landscaping and grow fast? There is a native for that!

One of the most common landscaping questions we hear is: “What native plants grow quickly and fill space?” The good news is there are plenty of native options that establish quickly while still supporting wildlife and pollinators.

Here are a few fast-growing natives featured in this graphic:

Acer rubrum (Red Maple) – A fast-growing native shade tree that can quickly add canopy and structure to a landscape with beautiful fall color.

Monarda fistulosa (Wild Bergamot) – Spreads into patches and produces beautiful summer blooms loved by bees and butterflies.

Coreopsis lanceolata (Lanceleaf Coreopsis) – A hardy, cheerful wildflower that fills in sunny flower beds with bright yellow blooms.

Campsis radicans (Trumpet Creeper) – A vigorous native vine that quickly covers fences or trellises and attracts hummingbirds.

Physocarpus opulifolius (Ninebark) – A tough native shrub that grows quickly and adds texture, flowers, and habitat.

Planting fast-growing natives helps fill bare spots, reduce w**ds, and support local wildlife at the same time.

Happy First Day of Spring!

We did it. We made it through another winter and one of the first signs that winter is finally loosening its grip in Indiana is the arrival of our native spring ephemerals. Spring ephemerals are native wildflowers that emerge, bloom, and complete most of their life cycle before the forest canopy fills in with leaves. These early bloomers take advantage of the sunlight hitting the forest floor and are some of the first food sources available for emerging native bees and other pollinators.

Keep an eye out for these incredible early spring natives:

Prairie Trillium – A striking trillium with mottled leaves and deep maroon flowers.
Spring Beauty – Delicate pink or white striped flowers that can carpet the forest floor.
Yellow Trout Lily – Named for its speckled leaves that resemble a trout’s pattern.
Virginia Bluebells – Clusters of soft blue, bell-shaped blooms loved by pollinators.
Sharp‑lobed Hepatica – One of the earliest flowers to bloom, sometimes even before the last frost.

These plants may be small, but they play a huge role in kick-starting spring ecosystems, providing nectar and pollen when very little else is blooming.

So if you’re out enjoying the warmer weather, take a moment to look down, you might spot some of Indiana’s most magical native wildflowers.

It's time to start keeping an eye out for this wide-spread invasive!

It’s that time of year again...time to pull garlic mustard!

Garlic mustard is an aggressive invasive that can quickly spread and crowd out natives if left unchecked. One plant can produce thousands of seeds that stay viable in the soil for years, so early spring is the perfect window to hand-pull before it sets seed and help protect Indiana native habitats.
