University Heights is a charming pocket community of San Diego. Located near the central Uptown area, University Heights is a thriving community with wide sidewalks and active art, music, and theater life. We have excellent restaurants, coffee shops, a bakery, convenience stores, imported food markets, antique and book stores, a rug merchant, clothing stores, a flower shop, custom furniture makers

and upholsterers, woodworkers, and gallery framing. An extraordinary variety of personal artists, ranging from hair stylists to body workers, are as much a part of the neighborhood as the churches, grammar school, UH Athenaeum School of the Arts, Trolley Barn Park, and the library. The University Heights Community Association (UHCA) serves to represent the community with the city, community projects, and developers. Our rich and diverse neighborhood, combined with the classic Arts and Crafts and Mission Revival bungalows, are always of interest to developers. Both the city and private developers are actively trying to increase the density of the community while avoiding established master plans. The University Heights Design Review Council is currently focused on compelling developers to follow the exemplary design of the Uptown Community Plan instead of the controversial ‘ministerial’ review the city is allowing developers to use. We depend upon local support, both volunteer and financial, to insure that change does not impinge upon the character of our neighborhood and appreciate all the support we receive in this ongoing endeavor.

NEW ISSUE ALERT - September UH News is out!

This month: our neon University Heights sign is shining again - but the $80K full refurbishment still needs funding, and we’re breaking down how to finish the job. Plus, a look at what’s happening on the Vermont St. Bridge and what neighbors are doing about it.

Mark your calendar: our next UHCA meeting is Thursday, Sept. 3 at 6:45pm, new location HSI Fang Temple, 4536 Park Blvd. and State Assemblymember Christopher Ward joins us, plus an I Love a Clean San Diego Q&A.

Check out the article from University Heights Historical Society from Scrubland to Streetcar Suburb - the wild history of how University Heights actually got built, from 1880s railroad booms to the streetcar lines that shaped our streets.

Also Dog Training By Lola “Let’s Normalize Ignoring Other People’s Dogs” the dog-lover hot take you didn’t know you needed.

Muzita Abyssinian Bistro - go behind the counter with founder Abel Woldemichael and the family story behind the injera, the spice blends, and nearly two decades of feeding this neighborhood. Thanks to Jennifer Anne 🩷

We’re seeing WAY too many dogs being walked out here in this dangerous heat, and we have to say it again: if the pavement is too hot for your bare feet, it’s WAY too hot for their paws.

Air temperatures in the upper 70s can mean pavement temperatures of 125°+, and when it gets hotter, asphalt can reach 140°+. That can cause painful burns to paw pads in minutes.

Please help protect our four-legged neighbors:
Walk early morning or later in the evening
Stick to grass and shaded areas
Do the 5-second hand test before walking on pavement
Bring water and keep those pups hydrated

They trust us to keep them safe. Let’s give those paws a break until it cools down!

Look at the barometer move! We’ve raised $31,852 toward our $80,000 goal to Save Our Sign!

Here’s the exciting part: every dollar donated is being matched dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000 through December 31! That means your donation can go twice as far toward restoring this iconic University Heights landmark.

We’re $13,148 away from unlocking the full $20,000 match. Let’s keep that barometer climbing! Click the link in bio!

Donate. Share. Spread the word. Help us save the sign that has welcomed generations to University Heights.
