The glittering promises of the proposed $5 billion Sands Casino project at the Coliseum site mask a threat to Nassau County's future. While proponents claim it will bring economic revitalization, beneath those promises lies a development that prioritizes corporate profits over our community's well-being. Set to be the second-largest casino in the country, this project is an ill-conceived plan. We stand firm in our opposition, committed to protecting Nassau County.
County Executive Blakeman touts job creation and increased tax revenue, but studies consistently show that casinos often deliver the opposite: local businesses close their doors, personal debt rises to unsustainable levels, and poverty deepens. Las Vegas Sands will reap the lion's share of the profits, while Nassau residents are left to grapple with the inevitable consequences – increased crime, addiction, and crippling traffic congestion that will choke our roadways. Hard-earned dollars will be funneled away from local businesses and into the pockets of a massive corporation.
Moreover, the project faces significant legal and environmental challenges. Hofstra University and the Village of Garden City have taken legal action to block the casino, citing an inadequate environmental review process and the potential for irreparable damage to the fragile Hempstead Plains ecosystem. The proposed casino would draw a substantial amount of water daily from our already strained aquifer, while simultaneously worsening air pollution from the increased traffic congestion that will plague our roads.
Despite claims that this deal is all but sealed, the Sands Casino still faces significant hurdles. It requires zoning approval from the Town of Hempstead, must secure a competitive state gaming license, and continues to be challenged in court. Public opposition is growing steadily, and our collective voice is getting louder.
We must hold our elected leaders accountable and demand a future that prioritizes community well-being over short-sighted corporate greed. The fight for Nassau's future is far from over. Join us in protecting our home, our environment, and our community.
