The Sands project in Nassau County isn’t just about building a casino—it’s a corporate attempt to exploit our community for profit. And they’re using our kids to do it.

After announcing plans to build a casino in Uniondale, NY, Las Vegas Sands sponsored an event with soccer stars David Beckham and Carli Lloyd, bringing hundreds of young fans together for what seemed like a moment of inspiration. On the surface, it looked like an opportunity for kids to meet their heroes. But look closer, and you’ll see another agenda: Sands was using this event to soften the community’s resistance to their casino and normalize gambling culture for the next generation.

While Mateo Flores, president of the Westbury Soccer Club, praises Sands for supporting their program, this so-called partnership is a marketing ploy to embed gambling culture in kids’ lives. By associating their brand with success and excitement, Sands is manipulating our youth for future profit.

This is dangerous because addiction doesn’t start at a casino—it starts with exposure to an environment that normalizes gambling. Research shows that areas near casinos face higher rates of gambling addiction, particularly among young people. Sands knows they’re building this casino near 60,000 students in nearby schools, yet they press on, hoping we won’t notice the long-term damage they’ll cause.

We must stand together to reject this dangerous project and protect our children's future.

A 24/7 casino means a huge water demand! Sands wants to pump 5.3 million gallons weekly—way more than other projects! Our aquifer is already stressed! Don’t let this happen! The glittering promises of the proposed $5 billion Sands Casino project at the Coliseum site mask a threat to Nassau County's future. While proponents claim it will bring economic revitalization, beneath those promises lies a development that prioritizes corporate profits over our community's well-being. Set to be the second-largest casino in the country, this project is an ill-conceived plan. We stand firm in our opposition, committed to protecting Nassau County.

County Executive Blakeman touts job creation and increased tax revenue, but studies consistently show that casinos often deliver the opposite: local businesses close their doors, personal debt rises to unsustainable levels, and poverty deepens. Las Vegas Sands will reap the lion's share of the profits, while Nassau residents are left to grapple with the inevitable consequences – increased crime, addiction, and crippling traffic congestion that will choke our roadways. Hard-earned dollars will be funneled away from local businesses and into the pockets of a massive corporation.

Moreover, the project faces significant legal and environmental challenges. Hofstra University and the Village of Garden City have taken legal action to block the casino, citing an inadequate environmental review process and the potential for irreparable damage to the fragile Hempstead Plains ecosystem. The proposed casino would draw a substantial amount of water daily from our already strained aquifer, while simultaneously worsening air pollution from the increased traffic congestion that will plague our roads.

Despite claims that this deal is all but sealed, the Sands Casino still faces significant hurdles. It requires zoning approval from the Town of Hempstead, must secure a competitive state gaming license, and continues to be challenged in court. Public opposition is growing steadily, and our collective voice is getting louder.

We must hold our elected leaders accountable and demand a future that prioritizes community well-being over short-sighted corporate greed. The fight for Nassau's future is far from over. Join us in protecting our home, our environment, and our community.

Why are we being kept in the dark about the Sands casino project? Watch as a concerned resident calls out the county legislature for a complete lack of transparency—no mailers, no town halls, no economic study. We deserve to know what’s happening! *While every effort is made to ensure accuracy, all content shared by the Say No to the Casino Civic Association reflects our opinions and perspectives.
